I am taking my forms to court on the 6th of July, to declare myself bankrupt. what i want to know about is my bank account. Does it get frozen straight away? I am having my working tax credit paid into it on the 9th. Can i open an account with barclays before i go to court, or does it have to be done after?

Yes, Barclays are bankruptcy-friendly, but be sure to tell them it is the Basic Cashcard account that you want. It is a form that you fill in and send away with ID, it take about 2 weeks to set up. I would open it after bankrutcy if I were you, I did, it is easier that way, in fact, I went to the branch straight from court.

In the meantime, the few companies that I had direct debits with, I rang up and just told them that I was changing banks and they sent me slips to pay the monthly payments at the post office until the new account was up and running.

I'm not too sure if Barclays are BR friendly but the Co-op are. I would open an account now and then see if you can get the tax credit paid into that account. Bank accounts are normally frozen, some on the day or day after so they presumably monitor the Insolvency Register, but mine was still running a month after I went BR even. It may have been open for longer than that but I never bothered checking.
