Posted - 29 June 2009 : 09:53:22 My partner and I went bankrupt in February this year. On Saturday we received a letter saying we could apply for early discharge, which we will do.
How do we start getting our credit rating better following our discharge? We rent a house, own our car outright so have no credit payments going out at all.

Posted - 29 June 2009 : 10:54:22 I have not cleaned my credit files in any way and the accounts are still defaulting every month, my bankrutcy date and early discharge date are on there too but I have just been able to open a catalogue account! I really do not know how, but they have given me a credit limit of £125, ooo I had best not go mad
I have ordered some items that I cannot get in my town and I cannot go out as I have just had a major op, so it will come in handy, BUT when I get the bill, I will pay it all off at once, I will not use the installment option. |

Posted - 29 June 2009 : 10:49:39 The following has some good information on cleaning up your credit file once you have been discharged - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=677875
Your credit rating will still be pretty horrible until the BR debts fall off your credit file in 6 years.
Unfortunately the only way to improve your credit rating is to get more credit and pay it off each month. Capital One have a card that has a ridiculously high interest rate but they don't do credit checks. Many people apply for this card and spend a small amount on it each month (<£50) and then pay it off in full. By doing this you will improve your credit rating as you are showing that you can be trusted with credit.
I am not advocating getting a credit card but just saying that this is one way that discharged BRs can improve their credit rating. |
