Posted - 06 August 2009 : 20:00:07 Hi there....in addition to the coop, I wanted to add another recommendation for Barclays...with do's and don'ts.
We went bankrupt on 20 July 09......
DONT DO THIS
Our account is direct banking and not assigned to a branch so initially called the call centre...in india!!! I explained that we needed to downgrade our account due to going bankrupt and she just laughed at me and then went on to offer me a loan!!!!!
DONT DO THIS
The next day, my husband went into a small barclays branch local to his work to try and ask for the same thing to be told wait until they check the register!!!!! We wanted to avoid the account being frozen without having back up plan.
3 weeks on, our account has been operating fine until last night when it wouldn't log me in online. Against my better judgement I rang the call centre again and was told to go into a branch!!!
DEFINITELY DO THIS
This morning, after speaking to our very supportive bosses we went straight to one of the main branches as soon as it opened this morning. Initially we had to go to the cash desk and asked to speak to someone in private, she wanted to know why etc, then printed off a letter that was posted out yesterday to inform us that our account was being closed and that they would send a cheque with our balance to us asap, alternatively if we would like to come into branch we could have their basic account (which we had initially tried to downgrade to a few weeks earlier)..the problem with this is we still have not received the letter so were unaware but they had frozen the account anyway. Her discreetness didn't continue and she mentioned the "B" word. Fortunately there was only one other person in the bank at that time..phew. She did then get the acting bank manager (who is also the area trainer) and another helpful person to come to see us.....they took us to a side room...and were absolutely BRILIIANT. They couldn't help us enough, apologised for the call centre experience, apologised for the wasted smaller branch visit etc etc & for the indiscreetness of the lady just then..... An hour later, we came out with a new basic account, including a normal debit card (no overdraft of cheque book of course) and online banking. Our money frozen account, pending a cheque being sent to us, has instead been transferred into out new account. All of our DD & So's transferred across. Savings account set up for the car maintenance etc to go in until it is needed....we even changed our home & contents to theirs, it's slightly cheaper than we currently pay but with a top of the range, much better cover.....so, barclays get a fantastic 10 out of 10 from us, and are very BR friendly.
Hope this helps anyone else considering banks to approach..it's not just the Co op |

Posted - 06 August 2009 : 22:36:06 I have seen hundreds of people get different advice about which bank, which account and nothing seems to be consistent - except the COOP.
Because there is just too much riding on it, accounts being frozen, money being unavailable, benefits and wages not being deposited etc - I always recommend the COOP. Safe is always best.

Posted - 06 August 2009 : 21:57:38 It was a bit embarrassing to say the least! I didn't look round to see if anyone else had noticed!
At least when I went in the Co-op they were discreet!
I'm glad you've sorted out your account with Barclays x

Posted - 06 August 2009 : 21:50:43 My goodness Skippy I would have died........I wonder if because Barclays weren't one of our creditors was the reason for the success..must admit though the floor staff could be more tactful.

Posted - 06 August 2009 : 21:44:30 Thanks for that post, it's good to hear other peoples' experiences.
I must say your experience with them is more positive than mine! I tried to open an account this year, a year after I was discharged and was turned down. I had been told that the fact Barclaycard had been one of my creditors wouldn't matter, but it did. When the account was declined, the so called customer service agent shouted across to one of her colleagues 'her application has been declined as she's been bankrupt, is there anything else she can apply for?' Luckily it was quiet in the bank, but I wasn't happy!

Posted - 06 August 2009 : 20:43:24 Hiya, yes it was called a cash card account with a normal debit connect card..apparently at one time the account only gave you a cash card to get money from ATM...not anymore phew so online shopping, paying by debit card in shops etc is now available....previously we had the normal account as you have got..the OR has no interest in it as we set it up on Jan 2008 when we started our IVA journey and told us that they would inform barclays this..BUT barclays have still frozen the account. we set up the savings and cash card account following BR today. Hope this helps xx |

Posted - 06 August 2009 : 20:26:23 Hi, Just like to ask - was it called a cashcard account, or a barclays bank account? I have also opened an account( barclays bank account)and they also opened a savings account for me. Did you open this before or after declaring BR? I told the bank i was going BR,and they said this account shouldn't get frozen, but until the court appointment, i still cant be sure! I would like to know whether anyone else has opened one of these accounts before going bankrupt, and if it stayed open, as i've had my wages, tax credits and direct debits transfered to it. |
