Definitely speak to the CAB, CCCS, National Debtline or one of the professionals who post on this board:

Reviva UK: http://www.revivauk.com/
Jones Giles - http://www.jonesgiles.co.uk/

BR is a final resort and there may be other options open to you that you are not aware of at the moment.

If BR is the right option for you then you can find your local court at http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/HMCSCourtFinder/CourtList.do You should contact them and find out the procedure for declaring BR. Some have an appointment system and others just let you turn up on the day. If it is an appointment system then it can take 4 weeks for your appointment.

The forms are located at http://www.insolvency.gov.uk/forms/englandwalesforms.htm You need forms 6.27 and 6.28 and there is a guidance form as well for more information.

It's probably easier to complete the forms online - http://www.insolvency.gov.uk/doitonline/doitonlinemenu.htm and then just print them off once you have completed them.

You will need 3 copies of the 6.27 and 6.28 forms to declare BR except at the High Court where you only need one copy. Don't sign the forms before you go to court as they need to be signed in front of the bankruptcy clerk.

Whatever you decide to do you shouldn't rush into anything. Even if your creditors are harassing you with phone calls and letters you will have a few weeks/months to sort things out.

Hi Janie

Welcome to the forum. I am not an expert but just someone who is in your position!!

Like you after a relationship split I have been left with nothing, but my debts are from 10 years ago so please don't feel alone there are lots of us in the same position.

Have you contacted CAB or National Debtline, I have spoken to Paul from Reviva who is one of the experts on the forum and he is really helpful and does not charge for advice over the phone. My bankruptcy date is Friday and I have used Pauls services to help me with this process only because I have no family around me for the emotional support and he will be attending Court with me.

Please use the forum if you have any concerns or need any advice, there is always someone that will be able to help you.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Karen x
