Hi There,

Only just got back on line after going Bankrupt in October and moving home a few days later. I'm going to write up my experience very soon as it may be a help to others that are in the same situation as me.

My OR has just wrote to me ragarding my plate and asked me to get a valuation, I got a valuation but it needs to be marketed first and therefore only a guide price.

I've sent this to the OR and they have asked me to make an offer. I'm not sure what I should offer, I cannot really afford anything although family might be able to help out. The plate is more sentimental to me as I've had it for 14 years.

The value of the plate I received was for £600.00, I've asked the OR what I should offer and he said he couldn't say but to make him a offer for it. This seems crazy to me as if I make an offer and he rejects we could be going back and forth,, back and forth. I certainly haven't got £600.00, surely the OR would need to advertise the plate before receiving any money any way which would probably be costly. Should I just make an offer of say £50.00. or could I risk losing it?

Has anyone else had any experience of this, if so please advise.

Thanks for all your posts,

I'm going to offer the £100 and see what happens, the car is on HP and could go back depending on what VW say.

It's personal to me so I will fight to keep it some how. Family said they will help out, which is good to know they have been very supportive.

Thanks again for all your help.

My plate was on a car on HP and as I knew the car would go once bankrupt, (it was worth £11,000) a couple of months before I went bankrupt, I paid £80 and got the car reverted back to its original number and I had the private number on a retainer certificate. This I was allowed to keep

occasionally it may help to think of things like the personalised plates from the OR perspective

wot is it going to cost me to recover the plates AND what can i sell the plate for

typically it is going to cost £100 - £150 to get mechanic to come and remove

A further £85 - £100 to change over the registration docs

most plates by their nature are personal to owner initials and numbers.

The value to the owner may have been £600 to buy but The Or will want to dispose of the plates quickly perhaps auction and release the cash realistically they are unlikely to get over £300 - £350 . A lot of work for £100 return !

Obviously that will change with the plates that are significant and could generate greater cash.. like BMW325, TRY6X etc.

Clean fresh, start low with your bid check the comparable sites, phone one of the companies and ask what they would give you for your registraion plate , You may be suprised how low they will quote

good Luck Richard

Is the rest of the vehicle exempt, if so this is the guidance

31.2.25A Exempt vehicles with cherished/personalised registration marks (inserted August 2008)

Where an exempt vehicle has a cherished/personalised registration mark, the value of this should also be considered before deciding whether the vehicle is of excess value. The procedure in paragraph 31.2.25 should be followed for claiming the vehicle if the registration mark means that the vehicle is of excess value. If the vehicle in itself is of an acceptable value, then the official receiver could transfer the vehicle back to the bankrupt as a replacement after having dealt with the personalised registration mark. It is possible that the bankrupt may wish to purchase the registration mark with third party funds, and if so the official receiver should consider the offer, see paragraph 31.2.34 for more information. If the vehicle would still be of excessive value without the registration mark, the vehicle and registration mark may either be disposed of together or separately as appropriate.

Mine was worth about the same amount and I got to keep mine!

I initally said a relative would pay the OR to enable me to keep it, but in the end, they could not afford it, so I informed the OR and expected to lose the plate, but to my surprise I received a letter stating he had not further interest in it

I can only presume it was not worth his costs in taking it and selling it

Might be better to say 100 perhaps if family could help you out & it's worth 600.
