The car has been valued today by an agent for the OR. The figure they have given me is £300 more than what the OR quoted on the phone. I have to let them know asap whether my son can buy the car back for us. The figure is supposedly the auction price but what I want to know is whether I can contact the OR and try and get the price reduced, or do I have to accept the agents valuation? If they take the car they have a round journey of nearly 90 miles to pick it up.

Hi Debtrider, I think the agent who was dealing with my car, was being problematic in saying the log book had to be changed when my daughter bought the car BI. Have now sorted it, by telling him that even though my daughter now owns the car, I am the registered keeper and therefore it is my name that should be on the log book.

No it does not work like that. All the OR is interested is getting the money for your car. The OR allowed me £2000 value on my car because I was self employed and cound not not work without it. The agent valued my car at £2800, so had to find £800 from somewhere, otherwise they would have taken my car. My mother then gave me a cheque for £800 to send to the OR's agent, and that was it.

When your mother paid the difference did the car ownership transfer to her? Also was she allowed to pay by cheque?

I had a problem with the valuation on my car. The parkers guide said £2200 and the OR's agent valued it at £2800. I did mention this to the agent and he was not very nice about it, and said bankrupts try to get the lowest book price but this is not the case, so he said.
Any I think I was definately ripped off with the price by the agent. These agents who act for the OR in giving a car valuation, must have to put an value higher than it should be, to get their commission I presume.
I was lucky as my mother paid the difference and there was not a problem, but If you can't get the money then I would certainly go back to the OR and dispute the valuation.

There is absoluely nothing wrong in challenging the OR as to the value. Have a look on PArkers online and see what your exact car value is use the lowest figure displayed as a guideline
