Hi, we run our own business, however we are due to go bankrupt in January and hadn't planned on trading in the New Year. Unfortunatley there was a fire which had spread through neighbouring buildings, although we didn't suffer any fire damage our shop was flooded and our stock suffered smoke damage.

We have reported the incident to our insurers and they have appointed a loss adjuster, does anyone know what will happen with regard to an insurance claim or has anyone got any advice on what we should do.

Thanks

David3,

thanks so much for the update, I know so well about all the questions buzzing, buzzing around in your head, all day, all night and then all day again, and guess what, all night again. Bet you know all about those 'sit up in the middle of the night, head buzzing moments'.

Once again, no words of wisdom for you, but for me finding this forum was great, I have started posting all these buzzzing questions, and hey, I get replies.

I only found this forum a few days ago, but people actually answer you!!. and not only that, but most of them have gone through this too, and they talk about it.

Hubbie and I have not spoken to anyone in two years,(thats how long, if not more, we have battled with and/or against this) not really even to each other, cos we both knew what we are going through, and didn't want to make it worse by talking to each other.

So I really hope no one minds me saying this, (as a total newbie), but just post here and see what these guys have to say. They know their Shi...stuff.

I wish you and yours a great new year, and next year will be better for you, cos from now on 'the only way is up' innit?

Patricia,

Thank you for your kind message and advice, I did 'make that call' this evening and it has helped with many issues and hopefully pave a way forwards. It doesn't help having so many questions buzzing around your head and not knowing where to get the answers.

Anyway hope all goes well and try to have a 'Happy New Year'

Thanks

David

Hi David3,

Firstly, I'm so sorry to hear about your fire problems, not really what you need at the moment when trying to close down your business.

I have been following this thread all evening, We are also trying to close down a business, I can offer you no expert advice or words of wisdom, as I have none and am just as confused as you, but like you, just want to get it right.

Except for this 'make that call please' I was one of the distressed people that made that call to Paul today, and just to talk to a third party, as he said, was, well .. phew, really good.

Put it like this, I havn't eaten properly in about three months and have lost a lot of weight, I just had no appetite, and couldn't hold food down. After todays call, I was ravenous, really starving, attacked the turkey that hubbie thought would last us till Feb. 2night that turkey is history.

I can only wish you luck through this journey. Take Care.

Patricia

Paul,

I know you can't give out contact details but would ytou like me to e-mail you first or phone you on the number shown?

david3 Posted - 30 December 2008 : 17:54:41
Yeah the damage is pretty extensive. We are in Wellington at some point tomorrow as loss adjuster has arranged to collect the stock.

Our situation is especially delicate as no-one yet knows that we are planning to cease trading until we had everything in place.

Anyway I will certainly check out your site and maybe catch-up tomorrow.

Thank you

I saw the fire engine this morning and from the lights ( same on Sunday) but hadn't realise the extent of the damage until checking the gazette webpage

Hi David

we are not allowed to advertise here so I cannot recomend myself. Which part of the country are you in?

You could of course either phone the helpline above or an experienced Assisted Bankruptcy Specialist.

Hi Paul,

Thank you for your reply. I'm not so much stressed but confussed. I don't want to do anything that could get me in trouble with the insurance company, but at the same time i don't want people to think we are using this as an excuse.

I feel we should just tell the loss adjuster that we don't intend to carry on, however I just want to be sure that this would be the correct thing to do. We don't stand to benifit finacially from the claim as any damaged stock would just be replaced and any costs of re-locating etc would be paid for by the insurance.

Woudl you have any advice on who I should seek advice from?

Thank you

David
