Hi Everyone,
I am considering BR but was unsure how it would affect my utilities. I am currently paying for them with monthly DDs and I do not have any arrears. My providers are: Npower / Scottish Gas and Anglia Water.
I would appreciate any advice to ensure I do not get any supply issues after I go BR.
Thanks for your help.

Hi David F
There should no be a problem with still paying your utility bills by DD dependant on which bank you are with.
You really need to be with a bank who is bankrupt friendly and would suggest a co op cashminder account prior to going bankrupt. Then you can set up the direct debits again.

If you don't have any arrears then there shouldn't be any problems in continuing to pay by DD however you should check with the utility company themselves to make sure of this. |

In all honesty your biggest problem is going to be whether you can pay your utility bills by Direct Debit, if your bank account is frozen at bankruptcy. So as I said open a Co-Op cashminder account and move all the DD's to that account.
If you are not in arrears with your bills then there should not be a problem, and you should not need to contact the utility companies telling them of your bankruptcy.
In my opinion just keep on paying your utility bills as normal as this is an essential expenditure. The OR is aware of this and as the utilities are not part of your debt, then everything should be OK.
You will just open up a can of worms by telling the Utility companies of your bankruptcy. You are not in arrears with them so there is no need to.

Thanks guys for your help and advice.
I have recently applied for a cash minder account so once I get the new account set up I will transfer all of the dds over.
I am trying to get as pre-prepared as possible for when I go bankrupt.
Thanks again,
David |

Hi David obviously each of the utility companies work in different ways.
I have my supply from Scottish and Southern at the time of BR, I owed them a small amount (£20) but have continued to pay by direct debit. So new supply after BR is paid for and i am not showing preferential to any creditor
today (2 months after BR) I received a letter from them stating that they are happy to continue supplying Electricity, they will not allow me any credit but
happy to 1) transfer the supply into anothers name 2) install prepayment meter 3) Pay weekly in advance 4) Pay monthly in advance by direct debit.
as long as i speak to them and choose one of the options electricty supply will continue as normal

Richard and Debtrider,
Thank you both for your kind replies.
I am still in the early stages on preparing but I want to try and research as much as possible prior to going BR.
Thank you again for your help.
Regards, David |
