At last I have opened a savings account for each of my 4 children :-)
I went bankrupt with my husband last June and was discharged on 31st December. What a great way to start the new year.
Just after going bankrupt I opened a Cashminder account with the Coop and they were very helpful and friendly and was no problem to set up a joint account. A few months after this I wanted to open a savings account for my children. I went into branch and filled out the form 4 times (ouch, says my right arm). A week later I received 4 letters to say that the accounts had been declined. I left it until today to try and open them again. I went into branch told them my situation and the fact I was discharged now and they said I could try but Head Office will probably say no again. I was a bit disappointed as they are very friendly and helpful and have no problems with their cashminder account, but with saving money with them, they didnt seem that bothered or willing to help me. Dont know if its just my branch or what. But wouldnt recommend them for savings accounts.
Anyway I went across to Nationwide and told them my situation and they said no problem I could even have a current account if I wanted. Of course I said no thanks to the current account and opened 4 childrens savings accounts there and then. I now have the passbooks at home and am so chuffed. I highly recommend Nationwide as they seem to be VERY bankruptcy friendly.
Hope this helps with anyone else having trouble opening a savings account.
