I am living in Spain. Lost my job 6 months ago. Unfortunately have not found work since. I can no longer pay my debts. What are my options?

Hi Tonia

welcome to the forum

I have copied this from the revivaUK website http://www.revivauk.com/Debts-Whilst-Abroad/

While living abroad many people decide not to deal with their debt problems because initially nobody is chasing them and the urgency of the situation isn't apparent. To many this seems like an ideal plan.

Things couldn't be further from the truth as it only postpones the problem.

Although abroad it is only a matter of time before one or all of your creditors will find you and either start to aggressively pursue you here in the UK by bothering family and friends or eventually locate you abroad.

The very best plan is to take advantage of the opportuntiy and deal with your debt situation so that you can finally regain control of your life again.

The debt solutions while abroad are exactly the same as if you are resident in the UK, namely:- Debt Management, IVA, Bankruputcy, Refinance or the Reviva Plan.

There are however some restrictions about pursuing Bankruptcy or an IVA while abroad.

Reviva have an office in Spain,

end of copy

from Richard all i can add is should you decide that BR is the best option you can either ask someone else to petition on your behalf at the High court (you will need a lasting power of attorney) or come back to the UK and present yourself at court

regards Richard

I am not sure if you are a UK citizen living in Spain or a Spanish citizen but in either case you would need to declare BR (if that was your choice) in Spain i.e. you couldn't come/return to the UK to declare BR if you are a UK citizen.

I would recommend speaking to several companies to discuss your options. The two below are very well respected and post on this board:

Reviva UK: http://www.revivauk.com/
Jones Giles - http://www.jonesgiles.co.uk/

Whatever they advise the choice of how to proceed is up to you so they may both advise one option but you may decide to take another. The main thing is to get a lot of advice, do plenty of research into the options and then take you time in making a decision.
