My husband recieved a one off bonus in his pay packet this month and we assumed. We are both bankrupt and assumed that we would have to hand thw whole aount over to the OR. My husband called the OR and he said we have to write a letter advising on the amount we have recieved and state a case for why we should keep it and not hand to the OR to distripute to our creditors. This has stumped me as i thought we would just loose it, now there is a glimmer we make keep some or all of it were not sure what to write. Any ideas?
The ORs can interpret the rules slightly differently. Some people have had to hand over all of the bonus and others a percentage (normally 505-70%). It also creates paper work for the OR so if the amount isn't that large then it may not be worth their while actually collecting it.
For ideas to keep the bonus how about:
- Car repairs that you have been putting off i.e. the car could really do with a new exhaust/brakes as they are on they way out. Don't forget things like the timing/cam belts. These are things that normally need changing every 6 yrs or so and people rarely bother changing them as they can be quite expensive. - House repairs i.e. new boiler, new carpets as the old one's are wearing thin, etc.
It sounds like the OR isn't really interested in getting the bonus from you so whatever you say you are going to use to money chances are theywon't follow up later asking for receipts.

Thanks for this advise, I will draft a letter today to the OR. As i said, we expected to just have to hand it over so any amount we can keep, if we can, would be a real bonus.
