I was declared bankrupt on 10/4/08
I have been paying my gas and electricity every quarter which worked out at approx £120per quarter EACH.I have just been sent 'revised due to estimated' bills.I only moved into the property july 07 (less than a yr) its only a 1 bed flat yet they now claim i owe £1,200 arrears electric and £900gas!!!britishgas for you i guess. How do i go about this? i have already had pre payment meters fitted AFTER my bankruptcy as part of my own personal budget plans now they are taking £10 elec arrears off of it and £8 gas.do i just tell them im bankrupt and give them the name of the OR office dealing? or do i have to inform the OR? Trust me I'd rather not have to speak to my OR ever again ,I just want to get on with my life!

thanks nikki

Hi Nikki

If your monthly outgoings have jumped up then I would let the OR know - do you have an IPA? let them know your disposable income is less.
i will let one of the other experts advise you whether you can include this new debt in your BR. There's always something!!!
Take care

hi vicki

I'm hoping I can include it in my bankruptcy as this was incurred prior to declaring BK,they are an amalgamation from the past 10months apparently.I don't have an IPA as I did not have enough disposable income.I really cannot afford to pay the best part of £30-£40 PW out(inc.normal charges)

As you say 'there is always something'

Hi Whatever,

Effectively, this debt was incurred prior to your BR and so should be able to be written off. I know it can sometimes be unpleasant, but I would suggest making the OR aware. Given your description of the property etc, I would claim it was an "inadvertance" that you forgot to disclose this on your SOA and take things from there.

Hope this helps.

If it's included in your BR you just need to get the meters changed so they don't keep taking the extra £18!!
I have a prepayment meter and it bugs me that we pay more for our electricity than anyone else! Your bills seem really high - are you sure that the amounts are right? I don't pay anyway near that amount and we're in a three bed semi not a one bed flat. £1,200 electric arrears for 10 months on top of the £120 you paid each month - that can't be right surely! Is it the bill for the whole building???

thanks for the replies,
I have only lived here since last july.I have to say I was astounded when they told me!I've asked somebody else who lives in same building what theirs is roughly and they say they pay £22 pm DD...hmmm..I'm hardly ever home ! I'm the sole earner and work quite a way from home .Maybe Ihave a poltergeist.

As for being included in bankruptcy well I wasnt in any arrears with them when i went bankrupt but obviously what they are now asking for would have been incurred before I went bankrupt.I also hate having to pay more for pre-payment but i'd rather not have the large bills. maybe I need to ask them to investigate it.I have justwritten to my OR todaytelling him of my predicament so fingers crossed he will include it.Is there a time limit anyway to include things not previoulsy declared?

Hi Whatever,

There is no time limit for these debts to be included. I would, however, look further into why your bills are so high as there does seem to be an unreasonable difference in what you're paying compared to the other residents (is all the communal lighting on your electric bill???).

...or the street lighting????

I pay approx £80 per month on my prepayment juice guzzling meter - thats with economy seven which is a higher rate during the day and lower at a stupid time in the middle of the night!!
I am home all afternoon and am not particularly economical with our electricity.
Can't do any harm to query it - especially if you can give them an example of someone elses in the same building.

If you don't ask.......

haha!

I'm certainly going to contest it.I only have gas for heating and water.I rarely cook anyway as I get some meals at work.when I was married we had a large 3 bed house and the gas and electric there were not even a quarter of this.I'm always careful since i've lived alone.washing machines only on twice a week and i never leave lights on.crazy!!..
