Could you please advise me what basic bank accounts to apply for and which would be accepted after a bankruptcy order is granted.
I currently have a joint account at nationwide and was going to take my name off that account before going bankrupt leaving a joint cashminder account with the coop still active(balance £2)
Would the OR allow that account to stay open or would that have to be frozen as well.
Thank you.

Hi Paul51,

It is standard practice for the banks to freeze all accounts in publication of your BR. If the OR has no interest in the account, he will write to the bank to get the account un-frozen, but this may take a bit of time. Many people have had some success in keeping their accounts open in BR after talking to the bank manager. Obviously, this would depend on whether you are taking them for any money in your BR.

After haveing my IVA I was advised to open a STEP account with Natwest. I have a debit card no cheques or overdraft allowed. All my direct debits come from this account and it works well. I do not owe the bank anything. Will this be effected if I apply for BR.

Hi Bennieblueeyes,

As I said above, it is standard practice to feeze accounts. However, a number of people have reported that after talking directly to their bank, their bank manager has agreed not to freeze the account. Provided you don't ower NatWest anything, you have nothing to lose by discussing it with them.
