Hi angela
a special constable is not one of the proffesions that is mentioned in the legislation so yo can contine with your role.
I would however speak to the HR department
as a police officer you have a duty to discharge any lawful debt. bankruptcy is discharging the debt.
I know police officers who have retained their job whilst br, i have also known police officers loose their jobs due to the circmstances of the bankruptcy.
most forces are actively increasing their special numbers, so speak to the federation or unison rep

As mentioned speak to your welfare officer to advise them of your situation. I assist many police officers each month with their debts, the only difficulty you would face would be if you were thinking of joining the force as a regular officer in the near further, as you would be unable to do so until you had received your discharge from bankruptcy, which is usually a maximum period of 1 year.

Just to add to Melanie's post, if you are thinking of applying to become a regular officer it would be worth checking their policies. I enquired about joining Surrey and was told I couldn't apply until 3 years from my discharge date.

I have to disagree with RichardP. As far as the force I work for is concerned, bankruptcy is not discharging the debt as an IVA or DMP would be and they do no look kindly on any staff members who do this. You may be subject to a misconduct hearing if you go BR.
The vast majority of police forces will not entertain you joining until you have been discharged from bankruptcy for three years.

Hi Kallis
we will have to agree to disagree as each force must have own or different criterea.
The police federation south west region have agreed with the professional standards departments that if bankruptcy is the correct action then it should be taken.
The case will be looked at and if the bankruptcy occurred because of perceived misconduct it will be investigated.
How can a force judge an individual and not look kindly at bankruptcy, when the circumstances are not known, bankruptcy and personal debt can occur to any one. (as this forum unfortantly shows)
I am aware of 5 serving police officers who have declared BR and kept their job, one of which after discharge from BR has been promoted twice.
I agree not recruit whilst BR.
i think that it does come down to taking proper advice from experts in their field
regards to all in West Mids force

I am not disputing that they may have kept their job if declaring BR whilst being employed. I was merely pointing out that in my force they will be subject to a misconduct hearing as it does not class bankruptcy as lawfully discharging the debt. My force is fine with people doing an IVA or DMP as they say that you are paying your debts back.
Once the BR is discharged then those serving will eventually be allowed to apply for sensitive posts and be promoted.
I can only quote what my own force states as policy.
You should look at each forces criteria before deciding whether or not to apply for jobs, or to see if you need to inform them of your circumstances. My own force will not employ anyone until they are three years out of IVA either.
Not that anyone is recruiting at the moment anyway.
I would pass on my regards, but I don't work for West Mids.
