Hello forum

I havent been on here few a while, all has been quiet regarding my BR until today.

My 'More Than' house Insurance was due for renewal mid December 2010. The renewal price had gone up by £9.00 a month so I shopped around and managed to get the CoOp to give me the same cover for exactly the same price I am paying at present. I am still hunting for quotes at present but am looking to start my new policy when I get paid in a few days.

I contacted 'More Than' be telephone a few days after I had received there renewal quote and told them that I didn't want to renew with them and I had got a cheaper quote else where. The gentleman who I spoke to (call centre abroad) took limited info from me, said it would be cancelled from the expiry of the policy and that I should cancelled the direct debit with my bank which I did. I thought nothing else of it until today.

I have received a letter from them saying that because I have not paid my December premium on my new policy I have defaulted my payments and they have charged me an extra £30.00 for the pleasure.

I phoned up 'More Than' today and was told that there was no record of the call I made and I owed them the money regardless. I explained the situation to the lady on the phone (another call centre abroad) and she was no use what so ever!!

Can anyone tell me where I stand on this and what I should do? I do not want there insurance for the period December 2010 to January 2011 yet they are trying to force me to pay for it!!

Does this affect my BR in anyway? I have got myself another default and demand for money through no fault of my own.

Hope this all makes sense!

thank you

Carl

I forgot to mention that I have paid my direct debit on time each month during the Policy and I owed them no money as part of my BR.

Thank you

Carl

It seems to me that at this time you are in 'arrears' and they have penalised you for being so, have they issued you with a default notice? If not then
It may just be in your interest to pay the £30 and advise them in writing you no longer require their services.

Or you can alternatively find proof that you called them (itemised bill) and ask the to close the account.

I would suggest this doesn't affect br as at this time it is a dispute / misunderstanding

http://www.morethan.com/Pages/ContactUs/ContactUs.aspx?option=Complaints

Go to more than website fill out complaints form and advise them if the matter is not resolved you will have no choice but to contact financial ombudsman.

Thank you thegovnor.

Yes they have issued me with a default notice which is why I posted on here. I owe one months payment of £30.13 (for December payment and they have charged me £30.00 for it. I'm guessing they have tried to take the payment again in January and this is why they have put a default against me.

Proof of the Telephone call would be difficult because I rang from work during the day.

I would be extremely annoyed having to pay this £60 for a problem that as far as I'm concerned was not of my making!!

Does getting a further default during my BR affect me in anyway? Do I need to inform the OR??

Thanks again

Carl

A default hurts your credit rating but if you are allready bankrupt I would suggest there is very little they can do to hurt you further. But as you say at this time you could be racking up futher fees and charges at a time when you are trying to start again.
You may find they have taken out a new 12 month policy which you will now have fees to pay if you wish to cancel. I would call them and seek full clarification on what they believe to be the situation.

When I spoke to 'More Than' today she basically said that they have no record of the Telephone Call on there systems and that I am liable for the £60.00 fee. There will also be a cancellation fee on top of this.

I explained exactly what happened and what I did to cancel the Policy but kept saying that I owed the money and would have to pay.

I guess this extra default won't affect my credit profile anymore than my BR will have, but the last thing I want is to be chased for a debt that as far as I'm concerned is not of my making.

My argument is that they could do this with every customer who cancels there policy and rake in extra charges and fees because its my word against theirs and I imagine this will be one fight I will lose because of the small print in my Policy.

Do I need to inform the OR of this?

Thanks again

Carl
