I have been sacked from my job. I have been overpaid housing benefit, council tax benefit and incapacity benefit to a combined total of approx. £25,000. I am now in receipt of jobseekers allowance. Can I declare myself bankrupt?

Hi Paul,
see the sticky regarding what happens with overpaid benefits entitled "is council tax included in bankruptcy".

Also £25,000 is a lot to be overpaid, are the relevant departments looking at any criminal investigations out of this?

Thanks for your reply bigal. To answer your question, the council wants payment in full(which I don't have) otherwise they said they will take it to court to make me pay.
And the DWP have not informed me of their intentions yet. I think they are wandering if its worth taking me to court or not as I am staying with friends and registered no fixed abode.
