I have not yet applied for BR but I was wondering if I did, how this effect my chances of working abroad during the 12 month BR period? I have been working for a Global Company for 11 years and have recently been asked if I would consider working abroad in the Phillipines for 12 months. Obviously this is a great opportunity for me and what might be a valuable experience for my future career.
I am however, concerned that being BR would impact this or ultimately force me to seek an alternative option (or indeed not go at all). I have already been advised from a Bankruptcyhelp advisor that providing I do not list my Coporate AMEX card in my statement of affairs, but that I explain this situation to the OR with covering proof that the company will (and has) always footed the bill that this should not be a problem.
My question is does anybody have any idea whether this would affect my application for a VISA or any other implications this may have should I choose to accept working abroad during the BR?
I have looked at the VISA application form and there is no mention of BR on the form but I wondered if a credit check would be carried out on me. Personally I doubt this will happen as I am travelling on business and am therefore sponsored by my company that have been established in Manila for a number of years.
I have informed my Manager that I will obviously need to ensure that all issues relating to my Bankruptcy are finalised before I could travel but I wondered if there was anything that could hinder my chances of taking up what would be a very useful opportunity. |

Hi Mst,
Difficult one to answer really. As different countries have their own criteria for visas, I would suggest phoning the relevant embassy etc and discuss it with them.

So far as I am aware there are no restrictions on you entering the Phillipeans as a bankrupt. This sounds like one of life's opportunities - so grasp it and get those flights booked!

Many thanks Melanie for your reply. I really would hate to miss out on this opportunity, for one thing, this relates to my other post concerning redundancy, it would mean that I would retain my job for at least another year and therefore could in theory serve my 12 month BR period in the Phillipines?
Would be nice to know that during my period away not only would I be greatly looking forward to seeing my family and firends after a year but also being discharged from BR as something else to look forward to.
I have just taken my first steps towards BR, I have downloaded the relevant forms and guidance notes, I have also been in touch with my local county court to confirm that they are the correct court with which I should petition for BR. I have just completed the writing/printing off of 6 letters and balance sheets to all my creditors with figures bringing their monthly payments down from £1,000 a month (1/2 my salary) to £600 a month (just under 1/3).
Whether they agree to it or not I really don't care, I want to clear my overdraft and have sufficient money to pay my BR fees so I don't have to rely on borrowing from family. |

Many thanks for your reply Melanie. I only hope that a) my creditors b) the court and c) the OR agree with your interpretation of my situation.
Next weekend is intended to be spent filling out the required petition and SOA forms, I will also book up an appointment, for early next week, with a very friendly CAB debt advisor who said at our last meeting that he would be happy to look over my completed forms prior to submission to the court.
I only hope that I can get all this organised and am still able to accept my secondment to Manila so that I really can start to look forward to the future for the first time since leaving my A-levels at 18.
