Today I paid the last of 36 monthly IPA payments! I won't tell you that its all been plain sailing and there are still times that my bankruptcy rears its ugly head but I'm 95% of the way there. Although I was discharged automatically after a year, I'm still unable to get anything other than the most basic of bank accounts. I'm not sure if any of the experts out there can tell me when my credit record will start to improve. I'm unable to get anything on credit to start building one! I'm also unable to get a savings account which annoys me - I want to pay money in for pete's sake.

BR July 2008, discharge July 2009. 15 IPA down, 21 to go!

congratulations alfies mum well done for sticking with it.

with your coop cashminder account contact them and ask for an ISA account. gives you a savings account

go onto equifax print off your credit report, you will see who has updated their records and who has not, challenge the companys who have not. you have spent your time and paid your dues

make certain that your discharge notice is on your credit file.

if you need a card start with a prepayment card, dont use it to build up a debt but clear the card and put further credit on it each month you then score points.

alas your BR will stay on file for the 6 years but you neeed to show a good short term history.

also check this from another poster ben and the response from Vicki, similar circumstances as you

Congratulations for finishing your IPA!

You may have a problem opening a savings account with the Co-op - even after I was discharged I had to appeal before they would open one for me.

Many banks won't open a full account until the BR has dropped off your credit file so it may be a case of putting up with a basic account until then unfortunately.

Regarding your credit files you will need to check all 3 credit agencies, Experian, Equifax and Callcredit.

Only when the last tree has died, the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realise that we cannot eat money.

Last IPA payment made on 28th June 2010 and I'm now looking forward to getting married in September 2012 - I'm proof that you can go BR and come out the other side.

Congrat's from me too.

I hope that you manage to sort out the bank stuff, it seems ridiculous that they are not willing to let you 'save' money!!

You can't really give a guideline David, each persons is individual.

Try having a chat with an expert - click on the link on the left hand side and give one of them a ring for some advice.
