My daughters husband has left her with a young child and a house in joint names which is in negative equity. She has a part time job earning £15000 which will not pay the mortgage of £800 per month. She has some other debts. Could she declare bankruptcy and give up the house to come back and live at home with her child. We would like to help her to rebuild her life but don't know how to advise her. The house is the biggest problem with the present housing market. Should it ever sell they would owe something around £30 - £40,000 between them for the shortfall. Any advice please.

Hi Lucy,

Bankruptcy and repossession may be an option for her, but there may be other options too so I suggest she chats to an expert or the CAB.
