Brother in law registered blind lost sight about 2 years ago, Sister in law works 40hrs for 16K, Brother in laws benefits cut not entitled to anything since new government law. They can no longer afford mortgage, they are 50k in negative equity, They have been told they are not entitled to any benefits.
I do not know what to advise them can you help, it looks like repossession is the way forward is it? can they declare themselves bankrupt to cover their 50k shortfall after the repossession, some advice would be greatly appreciated

I'm surprised they are not entitled to anything. My son in law is partially sighted and he gets DLA and has a guide dog and he is not actually registered blind yet.

Speak to the CAB to see if they can help.

My son in law does work so would not be eligible for that anyway.

Has he had an assessment for this? If not, then I would ask for one.

There are jobs out there for people who are sight impaired.

Hello there, like Kallis has advised, I would most certainly visit your local benefits office, and i would also vist your local Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB)as they can be more helpful in advising you on what you may be entitled to, you can then be armed with the information to speak to the benefits agency, although all claims are processed by the benefits agency, as many people who post on the forum are aware they are often not very forthcoming in informing, you of your possible entitlements - the CAB will, so if you have a chat with them first, another good plan of attack is to visit a website called Elizabeth Finn (just put those words into a search engine and you will find the site) and if you enter in all your personal circumstances they will come up with a detailed list of entitlements, again a very good source of information.

If having exhausted all avenues and your brother in law feels that bankruptcy may be his only option , then any resultant shortfall from his house repossession would definately be included in his bankruptcy.

Get the research done, and if you or he needs more help please feel free to post further, or indeed contact myself or one of the experts (via experts tab on left hand side of screen, and scroll down) any one of us would be more than happy to go through his situation/options

Hope this helps, Melanie
