Please can anyone help I have received two unpleasant letters from a collection agency which does not specify what the debt is I suspect it relates to loans dating back to 2001 I don't know what to do

The Limitations Act 1980 outlines the time limit within which a creditor can pursue a debtor for outstanding debts and only applies when no contact has been made between the creditor and debtor within the given time limit. This Act applies to residents of England and Wales.

The time limit begins when you last admitted owing the money or made a payment.

The time limit for unsecured loans is 6yrs.

If you have not made a payment or had any contact from them for 6years the debt may be statute barred.

You can send them a letter making it clear that you do not acknowledge the debt and that you believe the debt is statute barred. You should be able to find a template for this on the internet.
