I was declared bankrupt in 2001. should I still be finding it impossible to obtain credit and if so why?

Have you been discharged? Have a look on the insolvency website and see if you are still on there.
I wouldn't be surprised if lenders are generally being very careful in the current climate, so if you are not on the register it could just be that.
If still worried get a copy of your credit file from Experian, it costs £2 I think, and see what it says.
