Hi, hope you`re all well.
Since being declared BR in August NatWest, while letting me keep my basic a/c has, with no contact or discussion, stopped use of my debit card which I find quite illogical. I`ve not actually done anything wrong, I`m just trying to get myself sorted. I have not abused either a/c or card in all the years I`ve been with the bank, they`ve never had a problem with me, no credit or overdraft is involved, which I neither need nor want, in fact I`m better off now that I`m not struggling to pay debts & live!
Not having use of the card is costing me money when I thought the object these days was to spend less not more! For instance, I could have saved £15 on contents insurance against my renewal quote but only by paying online or `phone with a card. Also, with xmas coming up I`ll be paying more, not just for the few prezzies I`d like to buy if I can`t do it online but fuel costs too as I live in the back of beyond....no buses!
I had thought of swiching to the co-op but I gather they`ve just stopped allowing BR`s to open an account. I`ve looked at prepaid cards but the reviews are conflicting to say the least, some people rave over them, others say steer clear at all costs, some say they are accepted almost everywhere that Mastercard is, others say that many sites, including eBay, & other outlets do not accept them! All very confusing!! Does anyone have any experience of these cards? Any thoughts & advise appreciated. Thanks & have good day.

Hi,

Have you asked the bank why you can no longer use the card? There may just be something wrong with it and a quick call could get it sorted.

Thanks Niobe. The only way I knew it had been stopped was when I got an email from Paypal to say my card had been removed by a third party. I hadn`t used Paypal for so long I`d forgotten it was registered there. Paypal was also on my list of dd`s at the bank & Paypal had been removed from there. The card was never used for payments which always went straight from my bank a/c. The card was only there as Paypal requested a backup in case of insufficient funds in the primary a/c, which was totally nonsensical really as the card was conected to the same a/c anyway!
I noticed a Natwest branch open when I was out last Saturday, I hadn`t realised that one opened on Sats as it`s just a little local one. I stopped & thought about going in to discuss the situation but chickened out through embarassment. Also, I didn`t want to upset them in case they closed the a/c altogether & I don`t need any added problems!

You do need to find out. Give them a call, you don't have to mention the BR.

You could try opening an account with Barclays as they are usually ok.

I'm surprised they haven't written to you. Did PayPal say who the third party was? I take it thetes no problems with your day to day stuff? Are you registered for online banking? If so.you could check on there.

I havn`t heard from anyone & day to day stuff is fine, I`ve been with them five & a half year with no problems whatsoever. Paypal didn`t say & probably wouldn`t tell me if I asked. Before I knew about Paypal I couldn`t get into online banking & a customer service person got me back in with a a new password so I thik mabe I`m not really supposed to have that either but that`s where I saw that Paypal had been removed from my list of direct debits. If I talk to them & they realise I`ve still got online banking, even though I didn`t know they`d put these stops on at the time it was reinstated, they might gat annoyed & pull the plug on everything.
Another thing is, I don`t want to be walking around with wads of cash in case I need to suddenly pay a big bill like to the garage or vet or some maintenance or repair at home & the nearest bak branch is a 20 mile round trip!
I`ll try Barclays if It turns out that I need to change banks. What do you think of prepaid cards?

I personally wouldn't have one as they carry a fee but if its the only thing you can get then you would have to.

Just tell the bank you have a faulty card.

Just wanted to add if you go with Barclays they wont give you online banking whilst your not discharged. I have gone back to them because the co-op did my head in with their policys. I don't get online banking but I have a cashpoint near me so I go there. The advantages are 2 fold. 1 I get off my a**e and get some fresh air every other day and 2. It's instant and not 3 days behind like co-op is.

I don't like not being able to see my money every day but I only have 6 months to go.

I just wanted to say that I recently received an e-mail from PayPal, saying my card had been removed from my account (I'm with NatWest too and have had no problems re BR). The e-mail was sent to another address I have. I checked my PayPal account, having recently opened one, and didn't click on the "link" they provided; I found everything to be in order. Accordingly, I deleted said e-mail.

I think this could be a classic case of "hackers" trying to access bank accounts, as I have often received e-mails from PayPal (when I didn't have an account) and various banks and credit card companies, with whom I have either never had accounts or they've been closed, some in the case of BR, saying that details need amending, account needs my attention, account has been violated, suspended . . . the list goes on!

I get those all of the time - Paypal will always use your full name when they email you. When I get these I send the offending email to Paypal for them to sort out.

I get emails about bank accounts I have never held!!

Thanks for your input.

Yes, I get all sorts of stuff from supposedly other banks & I forward the emails to the relevant phishing depts.

After getting the email from Paypal I checked my NatWest a/c on line & found that Paypal had been removed from my list of direct debits & I`m guessing that could have only been done by the bank.
When renewing my contents insurance I found one offering £25 discount online which would have saved me a lot of money so I took a chance & tried using my debit card, it worked & the payment went through OK. I guess the bank just don`t want me to have a Paypal a/c even though my debit card was only registered there as a back up payment method, payment for purchases were only taken direct from my bank a/c & no funds were ever kept in the Paypal a/c.

Had a message from the OR last Friday about rent arrears but got it too late to call back so woried all weekend. When I spoke to her on Monday she said my LL, a housing association, indicated I have arrears, which I absolutely don`t, & what am I doing about it, what a cheek !!!

Now wondering what else is going to come up to worry about ! Still 3 months gone already, only nine to go !!!

Keep well all,
Mazz
