I understand from various threads on here that contract mobile phones are not allowed in BR. Is it possible to keep your contract phone in BR?
The only reason I ask is that the clever people at Vodafone have put a 100% discount on my phone bill since January 2006. I have advised them off this and also had an upgrade since but they have advised that only someone from their promotions team is able to access the pages to cancel the discount. Therefore every month I only pay for the calls I make and VAT. I believe that moving across to a pay-as-you-go tariff will result in me paying more money.
The expiry date of this discount is 2110, so unless I make it to 132 (based upon my stress levels right now I find that very unlikely), I will not be paying a phone bill ever.
Any suggestions? |

Hi MST,
I kept my contract phone as it was a "tool of my trade". From other postings, it seems the OR will try and get it cancelled if possible. However, given the small amount of the bills, I believe you should be able to out an argument forward to keep it.

When I went BR I out my mobile phone down under telephone, as I don't make a contribution towards the landline (part of a package OH pays for). I mentioned this to the OR and they said that as Vodafone wasn't one of my creditors and I wasn't paying over the odds (£35 a month) I could keep the contract. I actually phoned Vodafone and asked if they were ok with this (I didn't want to suddenly be cut off!) and they didn't have a problem - they actually asked if I wanted to go onto a cheaper package to help me! They also upgraded my phone while I was still BR.
Tomorrow is a mystery, yesterday is history, today is the present, a gift to make the most of.

The problem is my bills have been quite high as I have been using the phone a lot to compensate for the fact that I do not pay the £50 line rental. I will just be honest with the OR and if they take it they will take it.
It would seem a shame to lose such an amazing offer but I could think of worse things that could happen. |

If your actual call charges are very high, it's probably not such a great deal after all, so not a catastrophe if you lose it. New deals appear on the scene all the time. I actually took out a new contract with a different network 2 months after I went BR. All I had to do was pay a £100 deposit which I got back after 6 months.

So can I just check, do they usually ask for your phone contract to be termitated? If so, how does that work if you are mid contract? I mean, are the companies happy to end the contract or do they still want to chase you for the money for the rest of the contract? I'm getting so confused now-I'm not even sure I understand what I'm asking-hope someone else does!

The OR will usually disallow the cost of a mobile phone, unless you have a business need to retain one, but you can continue to pay for this from your income allowance if you want to, and if your mobile provider allows you to contine with the contract.
