Since making the decision to go BR (albeit a forced decision as a result of a lack of options!), I've felt much calmer than I have for the past 6 months. I feel as if a weight has been lifted and we're taking a positive step for our future and that of our child.
We know it will be very difficult and stressful actually going through the process, and we're very aware that the next few years will be tough, but still see it as a real positive for us. We also know that in bankruptcy people stand to lose their home and car (although luckily for us it seems our circumstaces will mean we can retain both).
When I read aroud the subject of bankruptcy on the internet, however, and in news items on the tv (today I heard about a couple trying to dodge 'the nightmare of bankruptcy'), I get the impression it's a terrible thing to do, something that will 'ruin' you etc etc.
It's made me feel quite stressed again today. I think we've read up well and done our research about bakruptcy and don't feel it will 'ruin' us at all, but make our family's future much more stable.
Should we be worried? Am I missing something here? Is this such a terrible thing to do, which we will never recover from?
Or are we right to see this as a positive step for us and our family?
Thanks for reading-just having a major wobble today. Any words of wisdom greatly appreciated!

Hi Ians
I know nothing of your situation whatsoever but i will give you my take on it from a man that also stood to lose everything because of bankruptcy. I went BR two years ago this coming August, i had a home with £30k equity within it that i managed to protect. I have to say that it was one of the most difficult decisions of my entire life to make, but at the moment i do not regret one single second of it! Whether i or anyone else who has made that decision within the last 3/4 years will live to regret it, well who knows, we will have to wait and see! All i know now is that i don't! We have all made mistakes for getting ourselves into this mess, and we, for what ever reason decided to go this direction because it was probably the best thing to do at the time, but in years to come when all of this has long gone.....who knows how we will feel! But live for now and not for tomorrow, and remember many successful people on this planet have survived bankruptcy and not only lived to tell the tale but have done ok since, so why shouldn’t you or i?

I have dealt with many people over the years who have had a positive experience of bankruptcy. I think it makes a difference if you petition for your own bankruptcy as you then have some control over the situation.
