Hi, I am about to loose my job, over the past few years I have accumulated debts of over £20k, my wife and son are moving back to the US. I have given notice on our rental place, so I will be jobless and homeless by the end of August. I am considering moving back to France (being french) or migrating to the US to stay close to my son. I was told to look into bankruptcy before deciding on anything. What will be the implication if I decide to move abroad ?

Hi Ludovic,

There should be no implication depending on what it is you plan to do.

Bankruptcy will obviously affect your credit rating and you will have to keep the OR up to date on changes to your circumstances when you settle abroad i.e. Income & Expenditure.

Thanks.
Do I have to wait until my job is terminated before filing or can I start the process ahead of time ?

Hi Ludovic

I went bankrupt on Tuesday and have had an inital chat with the OR during which I told him that I was moving abroad at the end of Aug and he was fine about it, as long as I provide an address and let him know when I get a job (staying with a friend to begin with). Just thought hearing that may help.
