Hi folks, All being well, touch wood, I go BR on 16th September. I was wondering what would happen if myself and my lovely wife were to open a joint account with debit cards before that date? We already have one with one of my creditors, which has nothing in it, and even if it is usable after BR I don't really want to put my money into it for obvious reasons.
Would the new account get frozen? Would it still be usable after and the cards too?
Thank u |

Hi GP,
The Coop Cashminder do a Visa Electron card which is a debit card, i opened mine jointly the day we went BR but i have noticed on here that many have done theres before and seeing as its a basic account it seemes to have stayed open. You can open one and then mention to the OR when we have your interview. Oh just make sure you dont have loads of money in there when u go BR as the OR may seize it to pay your creditors. Hope that helps and .......
Keep Smiling Jo :)

Hi Jo
I was thinking more along the lines of a big high street bank, because i've read that some people with joint accounts and only one person going BR they haven't frozen it. I just wondered if they do freeze joint accounts (when only one has gone BR). I will probably try and open a co-op account as two of my creditors are nationwide and goldfish (goldfish cards issued by barclays), do you think barclays will not allow me an account in that case?
I already have a barclays current account too.
ta much |

Hi GP
Im not sure on that with regards to Barclays but its worth a go. If only one of you are going BR then you should remove your name prior to BR and make sure you tell the OR. Also if your opening accounts prior then you may only get a basic account allowed for yourself after BR as we are not allowed things likfe OD, Cheque books and cheque guarantee cards, just a plain account with a basic debit card. Good luck, maybe one of the other experts or users might have more info.
Keep Smiling Jo :)

Hi Grandpants
Unless your account with Barclays is a cash card account it will be frozen, they will not allow you to keep the current account!
The fact that you owe one of Barclays sister companies money would pretty much write off any chance of you having any account with them post BR.
Also, in my experience anyone going BR who has a joint account will find that it gets frozen.
Hope this helps
Ian

Thanks Ian,
I am now with the Coop and have found them really good, i too had accounts that were joint and also now have been frozen due to other credit also with them. Hopefully GP will be able to look further into what accounts he can get now.
Keep Smiling Jo :)

Dont worry, if they don't except you there are alternatives, but lets see how you get on with that one first.

Hello i went Bankrupt in Nov 07, and I had a Joint account with my mum with Nationwide, I thought it had been included in the bankruptcy up until a few weeks ago! So they have been charging me £20 each month since Nov 07... but they said that the account was still "live" as it was a joint account. So, I am just going to pay the overdraft off now and then I should be able to use the account again as normal.
So, i would check with the bank first what they would do pre and post bankruptcy.
Thanks |

Hi 369,
The issue here is that it's a joint account. Under joint and several liability, you can be exonerated from the debt with your BR, but your mum would be liable for the full debt instead.

Thanks Julian,
But I wouldnt want to put that on to my mums shoulders, plus its a Current Account - not a credit Card, so the overdraft was only £200.
So once I pay that £200 back, I will be bale to use the account as normal wouldnt I?
Thanks |

Hi 369,
You should be fine. However, it is entirely possible the bank may close it once the debt is paid (down to their discretion though). Perhaps a call to your bank manager may be in order?
