Hi all, I went BR a month ago, and opened up a co-op cashminder account the same day. They're not a creditor and everything is going fine, however, I was wondering when/if I would be able to upgrade to a current account. The co-op representative I recently spoke with couldn't answer this question, so I was wondering if anybody on the forum has any experience with this? I get paid a regular & reasonable salary, never have payments bounce etc. Sorry this is poorly formatted, I'm using my mobile telephone. Thanks in advance, T.

Sorry, I forgot to add that a fully-fledged VISA Debit card & cheque book are the only reasons I'd want the upgrade to a current account.

Hi there - I think I am right in saying you can't have a cheque book - this is seen as credit and a no no whilst undischarged.
I have a VISA electron card with the co-op that I have been able to use without problem as a debit card and a paypal visa top-up card that again I have used no problem.
Hope this helps

Hi I also have the Coop electron card and i get along quite happily with my shopping etc.
I dont miss cheque books and other credit, if i need a cheque written then i will ask someone with a cheque book.
But i am enjoying knowing that i cant use what i dont have!

I've managed to use my Visa Electron in a few outlets, but a great deal only accept the fully-fledged Visa Debit. Just hope they accept Visa Electron when I go on holiday next year.

Didn't think about a prepay card as Vicki suggested, thanks very much. I will have to work out which one is the best value for money for topup/usage.

Was really just wondering if anybody had been upgraded from Cashminder after discharge from BR.

Hi Zamfir,

Having worked at one of the major high street banks for almost ten years, there is no legal reason to deny you a debit card or cheque book (however, the way the system works, the banks will not usually risk it until after you've been discharged).

Once you've been discharged, the banks will consider an upgrade to a "full" current account based on the conduct of your account. As long as you've had a regular salary going in and not bouncing any payments, you should be ok for an upgrade.

As far as I'm aware the Co-op (like Nationwide) will only upgrade a current account 5 years from your discharge date.

Hi Skip
Im sure i read on another forum that Co-Op upgraded to a full bank account after a couple of years of discharge. The person concerned had kept their account in order, then got a savings account, then an isa, then current account and i may be wrong but got a credit card as well!!!

I read that as well, but from other things I've read I think that's the exception rather than the rule - I hope I'm wrong though!

Hi I dont know about you, but cheques are nearly extinct now and the electron card is accepted in quite a few places, so for me im going to even after discharge stay with a basic bank account, less likely to get into any debt again.
Anyhow i will buzz off now and enjoy the rain :( AGAIN.

I miss my chequebook! I don't need a cheque very often, but when I do it's a pain and I will definitely try and upgrade my account to a full account at some point.

I normally ask Dave for a cheque, or if for any reason he can't I ask my mum. Can you believe that last time I asked Dave couldn't find his new chequebook and mum hadn't had hers? Either I was very unlucky or they don't trust me!!!

Hi Skip

I asked my mum to buy the BI in my plate and she said that would be fine, then went on to say thats if i can find my cheque book.
Luckily enough for me she did and that has been posted now. Thank god, I was so worried, mind you i get worried over nothing these days. LOL
