hi there,
like most business' my financial year starts 1st april and ends 31st march so my question is what do i do about my books from 1st april to 31st december 09 if i was to close my business after christmas?
Do I hand them over to the OR?
Also my next quarters VAT will be due end of november, if i can't afford to pay should i let it go until January and include it with my other creditors?
thanks, andy |

Hi Andy
if you are running a shop it is a lot more complicated than in you are an individual.
you need to think about accounts, stock, existing lease, employees, etc etc . In effect it is often like 2 people going Br - you and the shop.
Keeping clear records ir really important because the OR will want to know why you decided to trade past Christmas, where the money is etc etc .
What type of business do you run and what level of stock do you have? Have you calculated the level of debt ( business & personal ?)
You may also want to think about the landlord as if you go Br while still in posession of the lease it is unlikely that they will be able to get the keys back for a fe months.
you may want to think about having a conversation with an expert used to dealing with businesses and individual bankruptcies.

Hi Andy,
Is it worth staying till Christmas? If there is no way forward with the business is it worth struggling for another 3 months?
Have a chat with the helpline, and Paul above. I have a shop too - well, for the next 18 hours! - and talking to them both helped enormously :) |
