We had OR interview on 15th Sept. How long does it usually take before they tell you if you will get an IPA?

I was told during the interview and it then took about 3 months to set up.

Tomorrow is a mystery, yesterday is history, today is the present, a gift to make the most of.

I was supposed to make my first payment on 1st June 2007 but I didn't have any paperwork. In the end I rang the OR and chased it up (I knew I was getting one and didn't want it to drag on) and ended up making my first payment on 30th June.

All I am concerned about is that it is now 6 weeks since BR and we are no further on with knowing if we will get an IPA or BRU....
We just want to try and get on with our new life...

Hello Harbourmaster,

hang in there as it may be several months before you know what is going to happen. My wife has only just got her nil tax code through and she has been BR since beginning of June! I have signed my IPOQ (Iwent BR in February) but am still keeping fingers crossed for an early discharge.

Hi HM

My OR said she would write to me if they calculated i should pay an IPA (my figures are £400+ negative) so cant see me getting one, OR said if I didnt hear from her then presume one will not be sought. x

Hi harbourmaster

there's nothing wrong with giving the examiner a call to ask how things are progressing then slip the relevant questions in the conversation.

I cannot see that asking the question would influence them either way.

Hi Harbourmaster,

We went BR beginning of Sept, were told we'd probably get an IPA during our interview, then spent a couple of weeks negotiating it! We've now signed the agreement and are waiting to hear when they plan to take the first payment.

John,

I think it is probably best not to ask the OR directly about an IPA. It is better to go round the issue a bit by saying you are having trouble balancing the books financially (showing evidence, of course) and thereby implying that an IPA would not be apt. At any rate that is what we are trying to do and we are having trouble balancing the books. The problem with an IPA is that BR's will little incentive to earn more in the future.

Thing is, if everyone who is bankrupt doesn't have one then where is the deterent to running up loads of debt? I think it may well swing back to being harder to go bankrupt agsain, because the treasury is losing money when BR's are on a nil tax code too.

Hi RHB

I can see where your coming from but that would mean that everyone would get a BRU/BRO and sometimes that should not be the case.

Thats why the OR look closely at the cases given to them so they can determine those who really did not give a stuff and made their own debts worse and did not care about the consequences.

I do think that it should be made more harder, esp on those who use BR as an easy way out and then think "sod it" and start the process of more debts again.

And stuff the Treasury they have done nothing to curb a lot of this and its only less money for their own personal holiday and home funds.

When you consider the average maybe about 5K from each of us then thats nothing, the creditors are now bailed out by the Treasury so they are quids in.

Where is our help in all of this. We may have cleared most of our debts but what about the rest of our lives, knowing that we went BR to be able to live again. Will they bail us out? NO

Thats my moan for the day, i have no sympathy for them.

WEll, TAXES IN PART DO GO TO "us" in the form of tax credits, hospitls, education etc. I am not saying everyone should have an IPA BUT I do think if BR is seen as an easy way put that there will be no barrier to running up huge debt. I think banks overcharge on interest BUT surely if someone has spent the money it should not be too easy to write it off??

Hi RHB

I can see where your coming from and yes they probably will make it much more difficult for people to go BR in the future.

It is a case of watch this space and see if the government decide to move the goal posts.
