We have a joint bank account, with a £1500 overdraft that my husbands wages go into. Most of our monthly DDI's for mortgage, utilities etc come out of that account. I have opened a Lloyds basic account for me and it has been approved, just need to go to a branch with ID. Hubby also has a Lloyds basic account that he's had for over 20 years. Will he be allowed to keep that or should he open a Coop account - there are no branches anywhere near us.
What is the best way to prepare for his BR date in January? I am worried that the joint account will be frozen and our commitments won't be fulfilled.

Hi M&M
I doubt if he would be allowed to keep the account that he has with Lloyds so it may be worth opening another account with the Coop and make sure that your tfr all dd's over etc beforehand.

I was allowed to keep my Lloyds account when I went BR as they weren't one of my creditors. I changed to the Co-op though as I didn't like only being able to get money from a Lloyds cashpoint.
I've found the Co-op Cashminder to be a better account to be honest. I haven't got a branch near me but that hasn't been a problem as I do all my banking online and at the Post Office. You can open the account over the phone as well.

So you can pay in etc at the Post Office with Coop can you? That's how we do it with Lloyds at the moment. I think we'll get him opened a coop account and at least we can move all the DDI's etc from the joint account.

On the rare occasions that I have to pay money into Co-op I use the Post Office, but I've also sent cheques by post and they have cleared quite quickly.
When I pay a cheque in at the PO I usually do it on a Saturday and it clears by Wednesday, Thursday at the latest.
