Hi all....Not sure what to do or if anyone can even help me, but though i would post - just in case.

I went br in october, hubby did not. My hubby is self employed and since about sept 08 he has been very quiet and we have managed - just. However seen as he is a plumber there is no call for it at the moment - not even small jobs.

I realise we can claim jobseekers allowance, however because we own our own home, they will not help with mortgage payments for about 3 months - we have only just got this months mortgage.

I have some initial questions if anyone can help.

1) Has anyone had dealings with Mortgage Express and would they be responsive if we asked for a payment break.

2) Dont even know if its worth hubby buying BI in house now, as we are in negative equity anyway, however if hubby (or me for that matter) goes and gets a 'normal' job then we will not be able to afford the payments here, as we are still stuck as we have no help with childcare

3) Does anyone know what benefits are we able to claim etc. Any help is appreciated.

4) What happens if we have to leave house but hubby doesnt go br straight away - as we would prefer if he did not.

I have got so many scenarios buzzing around my head at the mo, and have not got long at all to sort something out.

Many thanks

Onwards and Upwards is the way im going :-0)

From "Moneyworries" to "Movin On" in 3 months is fantastic :-))

If you or your husband can work a minimum of 16 hours a week you then become eligible for working tax credits which could help. I may be wrong but when a friend was on income support I THINK she had to wait longer than 3 months for help with interst payments, I think it was more like 9 months.

Hi Movin on

The new legislation has just come in that you can get help with int payments on your mortgage after the 12 weeks now and not the original 9 months.

I would contact your local benefits office and see if they can help you at all.

If you leave the house now then your OH would be liable for anything that the mortgage co decide to add in etc.

Does he have any other debts? I take it he does not need to go down the bankruptcy route.

I also hope that you sort this out

Hi RHB,

The Mortgage Interest Relief scheme used to be available only after after 9 months, but this was changed a few days ago.

Hi guys and thank you all for taking the time to reply.

We are already on an interest only mortgage so i take it we would get no help at all

Hubby has debts of his own which he is up to date with, but this month will be the first missed payment. They are

MBNA Loan (£9k)
MBNA CC (£2k)
Barclays Loan (9k)
He does has a car on the Ford options plan (8K)

It is looking more like the br route for him also - unfortunately with the way things are going

Its so dis heartening to see him like this as he has built his business very successfully for the past 12 years and now this...aarrgghh

So...if hubby or myself get a job of a minimum of 16 hrs per week then we will get help from tax credits ??

Im so very confused and am about to contact mortgage express, but still dont know what to say to them

Once again, thank you all so much

xx

Hello,
Please dont be scared, there is always a solution.

Firdtly my mortgage is with Mortgage Express. Although I have not asked for a payment break, I have requested an interest only mortgage for the moment whilst I try and clear my council tax arrears. It took just one 3 minute call, they then sent a form which I signed and sent back and it was applied immediately, could that help you for now?

You can get tax credits, they are my saviour. Take a look at http://www.entitledto.com to see what you may be able to claim. Dont forget that if you are recieving WFTC then you are entitled to help with childcare costs (up to 70% I think).

Good luck.

Hi Movin on

I think you will find that you can still get help with the interest only payments just because your on them now.

I would def call the benefits office and ask what help is available and also call your local council see if you can get help with the council tax etc.

Let us know how it all goes and dont panic, it will all get sorted out. :-)

LOL

Oh and yes if you work a minimum of 16 hours you will get CTC and WTC to top up your wages.

Hey TD...thank you for your input too

Jo....So if hubby ends up being unemployed for 13 weeks he can then apply for help with the mortgage ? I may give the benefits office a call.

Its so hard because he wants to keep his business so will not acknowledge that its likely that it will be over I have told him, im with him all the way - business or no business !!

Think the hardest thing to deal with is the house - at the moment we cant sell because of the negative equity, but yet cant afford the mortgage.

I have spoke to mortgage express who have told me they know nothing of a 6 month payment break - i thought becuase bradford & bingley has been nationalised that it would filter through to us, as it is part of the same company !! So i have had to agree to half monthly payments, which is better than nothing, but he advised me that after a full months arrears it will go on the credit file - which would obviously not help hubby !! its swings and roundabouts at the moment.

Hi Jenny

I do understand what your saying, i cant imagine what your going through the pair of you at the moment. It must be awful.:-(

I am lucky in one sense my OH is a lorry driver, taking milk to the depots so unless the depots, dairies or cows go into administration then at least the distribution should be ok, it could still happen though and it is just a waiting game for all of us.

I am going to send big hugs over to you and i do hope that when you call the benefits office that they can offer you some good news.

All we can all do is sit and wait and see what happens, like you said its bliming swings and roundabouts and it can put a hell of a strain on relationships, dont let it get you down, both of you must stay strong and for each other.

LOL
