I went BR 10th November 2008.

At that time I was living in a mortgaged house which has since been returned to the mortgage company and I moved into a rented house.

On the day of moving, we took meter readings for both gas and electricity and telephoned them to nPower, telling them we were going BR in the process.

I am now receiving letters from nPower to the effect that there is a small amount outstanding for electricity (£40 or so) and that since I have not paid it they are going to start County Court proceedings against me. They are going to include £120 court costs plus interest plus etc.

I understood that utilities debts could be included in the BR, was I wrong?

The other thing is that when we left there was a small surplus in the gas account (£70 or so). Apparently they would normally offset the electricity debt against this and refund us the remaining £30. In this case there was an oversight (someone didn't tell the insolvency part of nPower that we moved due to bankruptcy) and we were refunded the full amount.

This has been used ironically enough to pay nPower as our new property gets its electricity from them and the bills for both gas and electricity have increased substantially.

What's the situation? I thought the most obvious answer was to include the £40 electricity account debt in the BR and offer to forward the overpaid £70 gas account refund to the OR.

nPower are telling me that I have to forward the £70 refund to the OR and that I am liable for the £40 electricity account as they forgot to deduct it from the refund. They say they have spoken to the OR about this but I've not heard anything from her.

Anyone any ideas?

(and Paul - are you stranded in snow? or asleep at the wheel?)

Why am I not surprised it's NPower, or Numpty Power as I prefer to call them?

As far as I'm aware the £70 refund would need to be forwarded to the OR, and the £40 would be included in your BR as it's a pre BR debt. Speak to your OR about this, and they should contact NPower.

Tomorrow is a mystery, yesterday is history, today is the present, a gift to make the most of.
