My only asset is my car, even though its not worth a lot. I know I have very good reasons to keep it even though I am unable to work at present but am worried that the OR will disagree. My question is if the OR takes the car, then in their eyes I would not have need on my SOA for vehicle costs (petrol, insurance etc). So would this become disposable income? Also I read somewhere that it may be possible to buy back the car (I think) by a third party. So as I really need this vehicle if we managed to somehow get it back, would I be able to reclaim the necessary costs? Sorry if I'm confusing everyone as much as I am myself - I have 11 days to go and the molehills are becoming mountains, and as for the mountains I don't know what they have become!!
Thanks as always Leah |

Hey Leah
Im not too sure about the car as i dont have one (i use hubbys). However from previous posters if they have any questions as to why you need to keep the car, they will firstly ask you to write it all down with your reasons etc. If you have no luck there, then they will go to the third party option. How much is your car worth ?
Onwards and Upwards is the way im going :-0)

The car is worth around £800 at a push. Which is a lot to me but not maybe to others.

Hi
Did you get a letter from you GP with regard to your position for the OR, because it will almost certainly help your situation in keeping the car.
How much is you car worth?
The OR usually allows up to £2000 for a car if it is essential, and anything over that car be bought by a 3rd party.
If the OR as problem in still allowing you to keep the car after explaining the situation to him. Then if a 3rd party can send him a cheque for the full value of the car, would this be allowed?

Hey DR
yes this is usually what happens as far as previous posters have said.
I should imagine with a car worth £800 and your reasoning (along with a letter off your gp) would be good enough reasons. Failing that is there a third party that could buy it for you ?

Hi leah
I honestly cannot see that there should be a problem in keeping your car at that value and given you circumstances.

Im sure they will allow that in your expenditure Leah, as they know the third party will be buying the car for you to keep anyway. That said i really dont think there will be a problem with you keeping it anyway.

Hi,
Had my OR interview last week, took an hour and a quarter as the person I was supposed to have had phoned in sick. They have exempted my car worth about £600 as I need it to get to the train station to get to work and am the only carer for my father who is an ex alcoholic and suffers from depression leading to numerous suicide attempts, hence I have to be able to get to him very quickly. Not sure if this helps.

Hi Leah
the value of the vehicle is well below the 'trigger' point as to whether the OR will question if is an asset of not. So there is no need whatsoever for you to worry on that point
