They want my car !!!! Its only valued at £750. I burst out crying on the phone -how embarassing.
I explained (as I had in my petition) that my father is in a home 60 miles away and that as I live in a rural area I needed it to get into the city to find work. He said as I didnt need it for 'essentials' like going to work at the moment I would have to make them an offer to buy it(yeah right) or it would be seized. I dont have anyone I can even ask for the cash...all I can do is try and sell as many possesions as possible to make him an offer
God knows what i'm gonna do
The interview itself lasted 45 mins and the questions were just really repetitive but I guess they have to be asked.
Also they are based in Norwich- I am essex/east london border so a face to face is not exactly appropriate.
I feel like a complete and utter loser at the moment.

Okay deep breaths and clam down. Sorry to hear your experience my advice would be to ring back ask to speak to the Assistant Official Receiver for vetting(he or she will be in charge of the person you spoke to) and calmly state your case to retain the vehicle, emphasising illhealth of father/distance etc/ sole relative need to travel to see to hims etc etc..
In such cases i have seen a change of decision - it is worth a shot! right now you have nothing to lose, and do not worry about going over the examiners head, this happens all the time, you are not going to give yourself a black mark!

I'm sorry to hear your interview went badly. I agree with Melanie though, it's definitely worth taking it further to try and keep your car. Did you put your father down as a dependent on your SOA? My mum is elderly and has hospital appointments, so I listed her as a dependent.

I didn't list him as a dependant as I guess he officially isn't. It just means that I literally would not get so see him- the train fares are huge. And im getting by on a pittance as it is.
I am also really concerned how I would get to interviews and more importantly to work when I find a job!
He did say he didnt expect the full value as it actually costs them £250 to get it taken....
He did say "I might be crass here but could u ask your dad?" Unbelievable! With advanced alzheimers no! |

I would write down the reasons you need the car (visiting your dad, looking for work etc) so that when you speak to the assistant OR you have this to hand as it's so easy to forget things when you're speaking to someone and things get emotional.
BTW, I meant to say this earlier - you're not a loser. Through no fault of your own you couldn't do an IVA and you've faced up to your debts and dealt with them.

Just spoke to him- really nice guy but said there is nothing they can do. they will only exempt it if its for work.
He said to go back and make an offer and they would be sympathetic.I said I didnt really want to ask family as they didnt know the situation and he said it would get back to them via the newspaper anyway! Thats made me feel just awful.
He said I should really think about talking to them
He also asked for the matrons name of the home dad is ! I didnt know- now I feel like hes tried to trick me! he said he only asked cos his mum workd in one |

2stressed I am so sorry. Not a nice thing to say that they would see it in the paper - they may not if they don't avidly scour it from cover to cover each week!
As for knowing the name of the matron - why would you?
How are you supposed to look for work if you don't have transport?

I don't know if this is possible (Melanie will be able to advise) but I would be tempted to appeal. As Jan says how can you look for work with no transport? I was under the impression that looking for work was a reason for exempting the car.

I did explain I needed it to look and that I would certainly need it if I found work and he said they cant exempt until I actually have work
He said people need cars for various reasons hospital apts/kids etc but they cant excuse those either.
My friend just told me to go get myself a cleaning job-then they may exempt the car!
I explained that my stepmother doesnt drive and I am down as next of kin and 1st point of contact in emergency and 3 times I had been called in the night . I find it very sad that going to work is seen as more of a necessity than caring for family. |

You wouldn't mind if it was an expensive car, but it's not as though they are going to make a lot of money from it.
How do they think you are going to get to the home in an emergency? God forbid that there should be one, but you never know.
Sounds very much like a 'jobs worth' to me.
I hope they are never in the same position, although it would serve them right.

I know- I did say that without it I wouldnt be able to get up there. train Fares are £30 and then £15 cab and im on £60 a week JSA. Do the maths......
They did say by the time they take off the £250 it costs them to come out etc they wouldnt get much. Why bother then !
All I can do is a bootsale at the weekend!! I get my JSA this week and my bro has said not to worry with rent this month. Im hoping I could scrape something together to offer them
My god when will it all end! |

our OR was a bit like this, we bought an old banger we saw advertised on the street for £400 because our cars on finance had been repossessed and me and hubby were going to share this old banger, I would take him to work and then use it for taking kids to school and then shopping but the OR hummed and ahrrrd over whether to let us have it! I said to hubby, "just tell him, if he disallows the car and its running costs, then you will have to pack your job in, (he has been there for 20 years) and there will be no chance of an IPA, will there?"
We got to keep it in the end but it was sooo stressful, we had a struggle to find a rental house that would allow the cats and it was on the outskirts of town, 2 buses to kids schools and college, I was even looking at trying to rent another house nearer to them, but it was ok in the end, even though the OR caused us a great deal of stress |

What a nightmare, 2stressed. I hope you do appeal. For what it's worth, my BR was in the local paper last week. I work with around 450 people and not a single person has shown any sign of having seen it.

Thats a huge relief Alisone.....
I just feel like I went the BR route to try and draw a line under it all - I will have to try and get an offer together if its refused I will be totally screwed |
