Morning!
I wonder if anyone could answer this query. I share a flat with my partner and the council tax bills have always been in joint names. However, I have recently been sent a new statement of this years payment installments but my name has been left off and only my partners name is left on. It does say in the 'reasons for demand' box that the liable party has changed. What does this mean? Does it mean that because I am bankrupt it alters who is responsible for council tax? I can't see why this would change just because of my bankruptcy.
Any advice would be appreciated.

As far as I am aware you should still have to pay Council Tax when you are BR. It sounds like the Council think you are no longer living in the property. Is the bill for the same amount i.e. based on 2 adults or with the 25% reduction for 1 adult?
Give the Council a quick call and ask if there is any reason why your name is no longer on the bill. |

I have now phoned the council and they said it was properly due to my insolvency. All sounds a bit wierd though as I'm still liable for the council tax and they were no way linked to my bankruptcy as I was completely up to date with payments and had no money owing to them whatsoever. The chap I spoke to couldn't quite understand why my insolvency would change anything as to the liability of the council tax, so he said he would try and reinstate my name on the account, together with my flat mate. It seems as though the insolvency service are finally contacting all those who I have money dealing with (as in direct debits, etc) to alert them to the fact that I am now bankrupt. Not sure if this will affect my other direct debits, like car insurance, virgin media, etc, although again, none of these were any of the creditors in my bankruptcy petition. God, I hope this is not going to open a can of worms and I'm going to be forever on the phone explaining my position to all these suppliers. I thought the whole point of going bankrupt was to make life less stressful.
Has anyone else had similar experiences.

Strange that you were taken off the Council Tax bill but are still liable to pay!
I wouldn't worry about Virgin, etc. as there are quite a few BR people who use Sky, BT, etc. so these companies are used to dealing with people who have been declared BR.
If you are concerned then it might be worth being pro-active and contacting these companies in advance and advising them that you are now BR and whether this makes a difference to your contract with them. |

Thanks for the advice. To be honest I think I would rather keep my mouth shut rather than open a can of worms. Virgin have continued to take my direct debit payments since I declared myself bankrupt 2 months ago, so I assume they are happy to continue with the existing contract.
