Hi all

Have read loads of previous leads on this subject, but slightly confused now.

Going BR in East Sussex(Hastings,Brighton,Eastbourne area).
Do I wait until AFTER my day at the court and then open a basic Coop account?
Or can I open the account now , but not use it until after BR day??

So many leads suggest a problem since its Brighton OR office area...?!
Help

Hi lost,

I opened a co-op cashminder account about a month before going bankrupt. I informed the bank manager of my forthcoming BK a week before I petitioned and he said everything would be fine and my account would not be frozen. I didn't list the new account on my SOA although I did inform the OR once my bankruptcy was confirmed. I had my wages paid into the cashminder account before I was declared bankrupt and all my standing orders set up from this account. I have never had any problems whatsoever and this account has now been running for 5 months.

Hope this helps

If you're going to come under the Brighton OR's office I would wait until after you have gone BR to open an account. They are known for saying they have an interest in accounts regardless of how basic they are.

I seem to remember Paul Johns saying the Co-op aren't happy with this as they have to open a new account each time.

Thanks everyone for your help
Ok, so I will go to court and AFTER being declared BR I will later phone Coop and set up my new account.
I lead such a simple life its unreal. One direct debit for life insurance and nothing else.
As I understand the Coop seems to be the ONLY one out there who will let you have an account at all...?!
Or does anyone know if I can set up a basic current account WITH a normal debit card (no overdraft etc) and pay a monthly fee.....is this whats called a 'managed account'..?

Yes...I bank with Think Banking, £25 to set up, and £12.50 p.m to manage.

Can take some time to get them on the phone...but if you have loads of direct debits, it`s good that you never have to worry about them being paid.

Hi lost,

As Memphis has mentioned, Thinkbanking offers a managed service, however if you have so few direct debits, etc then I would opt for a cashminder account with the co-op rather than paying an extra £12 just for them to 'manage' your account. Every penny counts!!

Hi again all and huge thanks for all advise.

I just wrote another question but most have 'lost' it somewhere....

My hopefully final question regarding this is:

Is Coop the ONLY bank that will give me a new basic current account?
There isn't a Coop for MILES from where I live and (panic) how do I take out that 'more-than-u-can-from-cash-machine' amount once a month for rent etc...?

Is there no other bank out there that will give me a basic account WITH a normal debit card, no ovedraft etc...?
I wouldnt even mind paying a small fee per mnth as long as I have a debit card....

Personally I think Think Banking are a waste of money if your don't have many direct debits, and I objected to paying for the phone call to them each month.

With the Co-op you can pay in and withdraw money at the Post Office. I've had an account with them for a couple of years and the only time I went into the branch was to show ID to open the account. If I needed to withdraw more money than the cashpoint would allow I went back the following day.

I've got a Visa Electron card, and they are in the process of replacing them with Visa debit cards.

I think the limit is £250 a day from a cashpoint (I'm not sure about the Post Office), but to be honest I'm not sure as I pay most things visa bank transfer or DD now.

And no, I don't mind you asking at all!

Hi all,

I still have the visa electron card, so I'm assuming I will receive the new visa debit card shortly. As I said earlier, I've been happy with the co-op cashminder account, although the only gripe is have is with the cheapness of the cards in that the card number and other details on the card seem to rub off really easily. I've only had my card for 4 months and I can no longer read the card number details, etc on the card. The only other thing is that when I go into the branch to find out about the status of my account, they are unable to print out a copy of the statement for you, so you have to look at it on screen in the bank and wait for your monthly statement. Its no big deal really, but when I was with Natwest I used to go in every other day and get a print out of my statement, just to keep a check on my outgoings. Suppose you can't have everything.

I haven't had any problems with the number rubbing off - I had my card for 18 months and it was fine, until I left it in Tesco and it had to be cancelled!

Can you not check your statement online? I haven't got a branch near me and I use the online banking.

I use online banking all the time - I only go into the branch on the rare occasions I have any money to pay in!

Hi all,

Have to admit I haven't tried the online banking yet, so should give it a go really. Went into the branch at lunchtime and asked them about the visa electron card now being changed to visa debit and they didn't seem to know anything about this. I had heard about this change through some remarks on this website, so not sure if I've got it all wrong or not. My current cashminder card is a visa electron.

Perhaps it is on the website?

I do recommend online banking - it's the easiest way to keep track of your commitments.

Hi everyone we have just opened a cashminder account with the co-op and it is still an electron card, they do look a cheaper version of a current account card but never mind as long as it does the job!! Staff in branch and on the phone at the co-op are second to none would highly recommend co-op for a new account anyday!!! x
