HI, I will be petitioning for my own bankruptcy on Friday 3rd of July. I am defaulting on an IVA due to retiring at 60 with health issues. As I had an IVA I do not have a normal current bank account, I have a NatWest step account. It is only a cash account. My state pension of £130 is paid into this weekly and once a month all my utility bills are direct debited out of this account. My state pension is my only income. Is there any way I can avoid this account being frozen. There is no other money in this account. it empties every month as my bills are paid. I have to these days have an account to put my state pension in. Should I try to have it paid into someone elses account. I asked the county court about this today. they said I need to get advice on it as they could not tell me until My BR pettition goes through. May be too late to do anything by then ( a week friday). |

Hi Natwest are is a bit of a grey area with bank accounts, sometimes they allow accounts sometimes they dont, why dont you open a confirmed bankruptcy friendly account such as Nationwide Cash Card Account, Cooperative Bank Cashminder, Barclays Cash Account or Thinkbanking that way you wont have the problems of a frozen account or the account being frozen.

Nationwide no longer accept undischarged bankrupts. The only high street banks that consistently open accounts are the Co-op and Barclays.

Nationwide accepted me, even though I said I wasnt in the process of it, but rung them and told them and gave my bankruptcy reference number, they confirmed that the cash card account is still open to Bankrupts.

Thanks for that. I presume the cash card account is different from the Flexaccount or basic Flexacount? Is it the one that doesn't have DDs etc?

I have a cashcard account. I have DD's and SO's but no cheque book or debit card, just a cash card.
I presume that's the same.

When I opened my account with Nationwide I opened a basic Flexaccount, which allowed DDs etc. When my friend opened hers (around the same time) she couldn't have DDs and has recently changed to the Co-op...

Thanks for all your comments, The NatWest step account I opened was after my IVA acceptance in the county court. I told NatWest I had an IVA. I am hoping they will feel the same about my BR. It is a restricted account. No cheque book or overdraft. Cash only. When I put my BR papers in on Friday 3rd June I will ask them if they will allow this account to carry on. I am hoping they decide on declaring Of no interest. Should I wait and see what they decide before telling Natwest about the BR. If the OR has no interest then hopefully the bank account will be ok. |

I had a step account when I went BR, the OR said I could keep it but I dont know if it is upto him or the bank but he said he was happy for me to keep it for my pay to go in.
We had already opened a cashminder account with the COOP previous to us going BR.
Best bet is to just give them a call and see what they say. |

I wouldn't use it in that case. The only reason I used my Nationwide account was because they weren't one of my creditors.

I hate phoning Nationwide - press this, press that! At least it's easy to speak to someone with the Co-op!
I thought about going back to Lloyds, but to be honest I was put off by their overseas call centres, which is another reason I stuck with the Co-op.

I went into Lloyds the other day and enquired and they said we may be able to open you a basic account with your discharge certificate when you get it, however it may take 8 years or even never when we offer you an account.
That doesnt look that good too

I haven't got a discharge certificate and refuse to pay £60 for a piece of paper so I'm glad I didn't bother with Lloyds!
