I have a family of four what is my maximum allowance for housekeeping?

I think its about £500 by guidelines,in saying that I put £500 down for 2 adults and 2 teenagers and was told it would have to be cut to £420.I would have arguedthe point if I'd got an ipa but up to now I haven't so not worth arguing over.
