 been surprised by a German tax bill

I'm really struggling now and have been surprised by a German tax bill for 43000 euros for work I did over there 3 years ago. Most of the earnings were gambled (crazy, I know). Will this still have to be paid if I declare bankruptcy.

No, all debts can be included in your BR even those from abroad. Just put the details down on the BR form and there shouldn't be any problems.
