I declared BR in March after my job (mortgage adviser) wasnt providing me any income, and i started a new job in public sector
I declared BR on 10th March, started new job on 23rd March, moved house on 25th March and then.......partner made redundant on 1st April. (Some Apil fools joke!)
Now my partner was employed for 6 months, and prior to this was self employed. As a result he is not eligible for Contributions based JSA. And because of my income (£1200/month) isnt entitled to income based JSA either. So he has no income at all. He has a loan of £300/month, credit card of £3500 which keep phoning and pestering, and he obviously cant pay them. He is considering bankcruptcy too as he is at the end of his tether but we cant afford the BR fee of £375. My I&E shows that about £100 more exp goes out than income and we just cant get that kind of money together.
Has anyone got any ideas - i was considering going to the CAB but last time I went, i knew more about BR than they did just from reading this forum!!
Thanks!

What is his total debt? If it is less than £15k then a DRO (Debt Relief Order) may be a better option and this only costs £90. The DRO's are administered via the CAB.

The BR fee is £510 and if he isn't eligible for JSA then he probably won't be eligible for a reduction in the fee.

The CAB (I know, I know) can sometimes help information as to who can help with the BR fees, SSAFA may help if you are ex-forces and some utility companies have also been known to assist with the fees.

The other option is to wait for the creditors to declare you BR but this doesn't happen very often as they just sell the debt on to debt collection agencies.

i think total debts are just over £15k but there is a rule with the DRO that gross assets should not total more than £300, and he has a car which he needs to get to interviews worth £1500.

The £300 assets does not include the car as far as I am aware.

The CAB do administer these, but so do some other companies, such as Baines and Ernst.

Have a look at this site - it will tell you all you need to know.

The glimmer gets brighter all the time
