My BR order is now through and I have been called to the OR for an interview on the 13/8/09. I am confused though - I have a bank account for my wages etc. When does this get frozen, and more especially between now and the 13th can I use the money in my account for everyday food, expenses etc? or am I supposed to leave it alone, if so how do I live for 2 odd weeks? I cant seem to make sense of this.
I am seeing the bank next week and they already aware that BR was looming, and agreed that I could have a basic account when it happens.
I also have some money in my daughters savings account as a result of a child tax credit back payment, this is for school needs, and towards her college admission next year - is this money safe as I am signatory, or can they remove it as part of assets? I am really worried about this and the bank said move it purely to her name, but if I do that now will it be seen as wrong in the OR's eyes? Please help I am really stressed, and altho I am relieved that the BR is through, this bit as a single parent is especially stressful! |

Hi The OR informs the bank usualy by Fax that you are bankrupt then he/she informs them whether they have an interest in that account or not.
Is the bank a bankruptcy friendly one?
Your Daughters account is she the named holder or are you? Are you financialy linked to her

What bank are you using?
If it is the Co-op, then you shouldn't have any problems.

Im with the Halifax and have an appointment with them next friday re opening a different account so I can sort things out. My daughters account is hers but with me as the signatory/trustee - should I put is solely in her name. i had a sizeable rebate from tax credits and paid off a bill at 1000, put 1500 in her account - I am hoping that it is safe! |

Hi
Halifax arent bankruptcy friendly so your best getting away from them.
And I would put your daughters account in her name with no trustee

I would definitely move to the Co-op. Halifax are not a good bank to be with.

Halifax have this weird setup the branch will say yes we will accept you, then head office close the account down, they did it to me, a direct debit failed and they put the charge of £20 on the account, which they never used to put charges for and then sent me a cheque totalling £6 for the money in my savings account.
They also said they would defo welcome me back for easycash then three years on for their bank account post bankruptcy.
So I would stay clear of them

Halifax were one of my creditors and were a nightmare. I don't know what they are like with accounts for people who are bankrupt.

Hi Jan
As I said above they dont accept Undischarged Bankrupts but give conflicting information from Branch and Head office.
They seem to accept Discharged Bankrupts once you can provide a certificate / letter of disscharge

Personally, I wouldn't touch Halifax or HSBC with a barge pole!

Hi Rhina,
Just looked at your question about bank account for a BR.
I am not an expert, but from my own experience the co-op is GREAT for me (and my wife who is not BR). We each have a Cashminder account and the staff from my experience is good - i wnet to see them and said I had just declared BR - not a problem sir she said and there it was - I manage my money daily now mini statement - even got a 20p interest the other day.
As an aside the staff member that spoke to me and set up the a/c said that almost every BR in the City (Plymouth) were new customers!!
Good luck to you, Regards, Richard |

Hi again,
For got to say "Good luck" with your interview with the BR on the 13th - mine was a long time (10 hours) - nearly 11 in one hit...we agreed a five minurte break - he provided water for us and a couiple of cups of coffee no holds barred...
He was great and at the end of the day 6.00p.m.plus he shook my hand and said, You can call me **** (his first name) - he said, I had no other chouce - personal debt and business and clients (an estate agency and letting agency)
Onwards and upwards...
No problems, only solutions - a simple, but effective motto for me it works!! Regards again Richard |

I would advise anyone to steer clear of the HBOS group. When I ran into my financial difficulties they behaved like loan sharks calling my day and night (sometimes at 4am) and up to 15 times a day. When I complained they just laughed saying that they would harrass me until I paid up.
Not sure this is relevant but I will do whatever I can to drive customer's away from them! Just wish the Government had let them go to the wall unlike the majority of other hardworking people in this country. |

Hi Ling
no point in activating the halifax account as it is 99.9% likely to be closed down.
COOP Cashminder account is the one you need
