Sorry if these qusetions have been asked before but here goes. My wife and I are going to declare ourselves bankrupt (on the advice of an IP) Do we need professional help to do this or can we do it our selves? If we go it alone what is the first step we need to take? How long does the process usually take? I am sure there will be a lot more questions to follow, we have told our immediate family and thay have offered help and support, but we are both terrified of what the future may hold! Any help much appreciated.
Your IP should be able to provide you with answers to any questions you have, other than that the forum here is brilliant to help with problems or you can email one of the experts direct who will go through everything with you.
The process of filing for bankruptcy has been designed for you to do yourself, you can ring your local county court and obtain a copy of the forms (whilst on the phone ask when their next available appointment is as some are booking 6 weeks ahead!) or you can go online at the insolvency service website and complete the forms online. There are many companies offering bankruptcy assist and some people feel very happy having somone do the procress for them but this will add aroud £500 on top of the £510 each you will have to pay to file for bankruptcy. Another servie is one provided by the local Citizens Advice Bureau who will complete the forms for you at no cost.

There isn't a need to have professional help when declaring BR unless your case is particularly awkward.
For BR you can find your local court at http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/HMCSCourtFinder/CourtList.do You should contact them and find out the procedure for declaring BR. Some have an appointment system and others just let you turn up on the day. If it is an appointment system then it can take 4 weeks for your appointment.
You will need 3 copies of the 6.27 and 6.28 forms to declare BR except at the High Court where you only need one copy. Don't sign the forms before you go to court as they need to be signed in front of the bankruptcy clerk.

Look at http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/HMCSCourtFinder/CourtList.do and there is a 'Court Work Type Search' menu. Select 'Bankruptcy' it will show all of the courts that can process BR applications. Select your nearest one and when you call them to check the process they will ask for your postcode to make sure you are in their catchment area.
