I recently tried opening a basic account with NatWest online and they said if I could prove I was discharged then they would open up an account for me. I went down to my local branch with a letter from my OR saying I was discharged May 2006. They said that should be fine and said they would phone me the next day to confirm the account had been opened. They never phoned and 10 days later I went back to the branch and they told me their policy had changed and they now needed the certificate of discharge. I went to my county court and asked about getting one and they said I need a letter of request (ie from the bank) and the £60 fee. I said the bank will not give me a letter of request (they confirmed that later that day and they took the original letter they sent me which they no longer have! ) and the court said they cannot do it. Is there any way of getting a certificate without a letter of request or is there another way around it? I'm at my wits end about this. I only wanted a seperate basic account to have as a "shopping" account and if I dont get this done then thats a unsatisfactory against my name on credit report!
Unless things have changed you should just be able to request a certificate of discharge from the court, you don't need anything from the bank.
I would go back to the court and ask them why they need this.
Could you not open a second account with your current bank. I have 2 Cashminder accounts and that works well for me and also means transfers between accounts are instant.

My main account is with co-op but the nearest branch is 60 miles away so it was easier to have a branch in my home town. I thought I may need a certificate once it's been over 6 years so I can take the BR off my credit scores. I assumed I just went down there maybe filled out a form and that was it! Maybe I should go down there again and ask.
To be honest I've only ever been into a Co-op branch once. I do all my banking at the Post Office.
I was told that if I wanted a certificate I would have to write to the court where I was made BR with a cheque for £60 giving them full details of my BR.
