I am currently bankrupt and receive benefits. I don't have any bank account whatsoever. The benefits people want to pay my incapacity benefit into an account and stop me receiving a giro cheque. Which seem awkward and inconvenient but i have to go with it.

Can i open the basic post office 'card account' for my benefits to be paid into while i am bankrupt. And if i can do i need to declare this to the local county court where i went bankrupt.

Hi,

As already said, there are basic bank accounts that you can use for paying bills by direct debit and also the post office basic account for things like CHB, IS etc to be paid into.

I believe the best account is the Co-op Cashminder - no frills, no check book and no overdraft - BUT very BR friendly.

As to seeing the Ombudsman appointment for face to face or telephone interview, they will come to you soon, I am sure. You may want to call their office and ask them - quote your BR number to them.

I wish you well, Richard

As skippy says you can open a post office account for any benefits or wages to be paid into.

There are banks out there who will allow you a basic bank account. At your interview with the Official Receiver they should have provided you with a leaflet explaining about bank accounts in bankruptcy. This is avaliable on the Insolvency Service Website under the tab forms.

Also you should also be able to obtain a prepaid card which would give you access to your money at any cash machine in the UK (but beware some of these firms do charge admin fees for loading money and taking money out)

I'm pretty sure that you can open the PO account, and no, you won't need to tell the court about it.
