I am currently on benefits and have a debt of £4,000 and struggling to pay it. Can I declare myself bankrupt? I am afriad of my family knowing, so what information gets put in the local newspaper?

Unless you have localised debts, then nothing goes into local papers anymore. Just the London Gazette, (and the Insolvency register),i think.

....and as others say on here....todays news, is tomorrows chip wrapper!!.

all the best..

Hiya Leanne

I agree totally with Debtinfo about the Debt Relief Orders. Might I suggest that as you have access to the internet that you look on websites about DRO's so that you understand what they involve.

All the best.

I would speak to the CAB, CCCS or national debtline, there are other options a DRO in particlular which is for people on low income and with debts less than £15,000
