I have been married to my husband for almost 2 years; he has been unemployed for most of this time. I have been supporting him financially; we live in London in privately rented accommodation, for which I have been paying the rent and bills
He persuaded me to put his name (will help him to rebuild his credit scores? ) on water bill, my and his name is on gas and electricity, however I have been paying for it- all direct debits come out of my account .

I knew he was broke (I knew he was in some debt but I didn’t know the details, still really don’t). I am slowly finding out bits and pieces.
I had no issue with supporting him for a while. The problem is that is has been 2 years of me paying for everything (he finally found a job couple of months ago). He didn’t seek any advice with regards to his debts, he has been hiding letters and ignoring them.

I just found out from him that debt collectors are going to call in NOTIFICATION OF INTENDED VISIT for the debt he had before we got married not idea how much but, my guess less that £10k. (As I have been supporting him since we got married he has not accrued any debts while married to me)

Well my husband informed me that if I let them in they will take everything that I do not have receipt in my name for?

I have been living in UK for 6 years, and of course I not longer have receipts for most of my belongings (I didn’t really think that is worth to keep them in case debt collector walks in to my home).
I do not have any joint accounts with my husband. Last year when I was refused credit card I requested my credit report and realised that they made me financially connected with my husband (suspected his credit score is not very good) so I wrote to Experian do explain that I do not have financial connection with my husband, they logged the disassociation in.

Can debt collectors come after me for the debt he got before we got married? Can they take my belongings from the house?

Thanks in advance

Anna

hi and welcome to the forum
firstly i would not let any debt collectors in... they do not have right of entry they are not baliffs.
it is possible that if baliffs came in they would attempt to distrain upon goods and the onus of proof of ownership is on you. Do not let them in. again only court baliffs have rights of access with court orders.
get your husband toseek advice on his debts either the CAB or CCCS both free and will discuss the options available to him BR is only one option and it may or may not be suitable.

RevivaUK and Paul Johns helped me through it all i can't recommend them enough!!

HI Anna

The notice of intended visit letter is a standard letter from the finance companies, it does not always mean that they will visit, I had a ratio of 5 letters per one visit.

Totally agree with Chester let no one that you do not know in your house.

This debt issue will not go away and sooner rather than later your hubby will have to put his hands up inthe air and get it all sorted.

well done for supporting him over the past 2 years.

I would encourage you both together to discuss the whole situation with an external party as you will both have loads of what if questions.

CAB / CCCS or even try to contact one of the experts to the left, Chester and I have had help from the same company and both hold them in high regard.

good luck Richard
