can you let me know if there are any other costs associated with making yourself bankrupt apart from the £600 mentioned on this page. My neice receives sickness benefit and has a child - would she get a reduction in the fee?

she is likely to get the £150 court reduction fee

contact the court before and they will let you know if it is dealt with before, during or after BR date

thanks for that. Will she have to pay a solicitor to do it for her or will she get legal aid??

hi julie

you do not need to get a solicitor to declare bankrupt, if you contact the local court and ask for the bankruptcy clerk who is normally very helpful.

some people are able to self petition for bankruptcy, some need the guidance of an expert

I have not heard of anyone getting legal aid to help declare bankruptcy.

Hi Richard
Please forgive my ignorance as i don't know about these things. I am just trying to find out for my niece as she has got herself into a lot of debt and this seems the only way to get out of it. Thanks for all your help and advice - really appreciate it

Hi Julie

the only silly question is the one that you do not ask !

have you both visited CAB ? they are normally good at giving impartial advice alternatly speak to one of the experts to the left.
