Did the OR indicate that you would get an IPA? If not, then it's normal not to hear anything.

Yes, you can open a bank account. The 2 BR friendly accounts are the Co-op Cashminder (which I would recommend) or the basic Barclays account. You can open the Co-op account on the phone or in a branch, and I think the Barclays one is the same.

Only when the last tree has died, the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realise that we cannot eat money.

Last IPA payment made on 28th June 2010 - it's over at last!

Hi thanks for your reply

I'm not on a ipa. So that makes sence why I have not heard anything off the OR.

Thanks for the info about the banks I'm a bit worried about calling them.

Don't worry about calling them. The Co-op especially are very bankrutpcy friendly, and their customer service is great - I never felt as though I was being judged at all.

It's a Visa Debit card, but for some reason some shops won't accept it online, and you can't use it for pay at the pump petrol.

The account does come with online banking, which the Barclays account doesn't have while you are BR.

This is just my personal opinion, but I would choose the Co-op over Barclays any day. The only reason I'm not still with them is that my pre BR full Nationwide account is still open. If it wasn't I would have been happy to stay with the Co-op.

Definately stay with the coop -

there are places that the Visa Electron doesn;t work -

British Rail -
Easy Jet online purchase
Travelodge

Many Automated Petrol Stations where you prepay for the fuel - usually late at night.

You can overcome this by also having an emergency £100 on a pre paid Credit card

I have just opened a co-op cashminder account, and it is no longer an electron card, it is a Visa Debit card.
The only things are that as there are overdraft restrictions on the card, it can only be accepted by retailers who do a real time check for funds.

The other restriction is that some internet stores and remote or unmanned terminals(e.g. Aircraft, petrol pay at pump and parking pay points) cannot support the card, because their systems are unable to immediately check if funds are available in the account.

So emergency funds on a pre paid credit card as stated previously would help.
