Just wondering how bankruptcy affects mobile phone contracts. I assume the contract would be cancelled, but would the phone, which might be worth several hundred pounds even secondhand, be seized by the Official Receiver? Or returned to the mobile operator?

Would a bankrupt be able to transfer their number from the contract to a prepaid simcard on another network?

Cheers :)

I think that if the phone is over £500 the details have to be entered on BR Petition.

Once Br you cannot have credit more than £500 unless the creditor is aware of your status. Years phone contract cant be more than £45 a month.

I have retained my phone and number even same contract with my phone company, may have challenges if i search out new phone tariff or company as they will do credit check.

speak to the phone company and find their take on BR.

I didn't declare my mobile phone or the contract.

You need to check the cost of your contract, and take into account the length - for example an 18 month contract at £30 a month would take you over the £500 credit threshold.

Once you've been BR it's unlikely you'll be able to change mobile phone providers until your credit rating is clear, but there shouldn't be a problem upgrading or changing the tariff with the same company as it's unlikely they'd credit check an existing customer.

Hi Sarah

I has exactly the same issue when renewing my Orange mobile phone contract with them 6 weeks ago. I didn't owe them any money, always paid my D.D on time........

They were unaware when I renewed my contract that I was currently BR and I didn't tell them as I wanted to keep this contact running long term to start to improve my credit rating after BR.

If you look half way down the forum list there is a post called

'Orange Mobile Phone Contract - Renewal'

There is alot of information that might help you and answer some of the questions you may have.
